1. If you believe me in my talk, my conjectures
My secrets have certainly been conveyed by the talebearers of my eyelids

2. And despite my keeping a secret guarded
It comes out through my tears, no longer concealed

3. And I'm grieved, O people of my love, that you
Delayed though able to settle my debts

4. By my soul, you are my messenger to them
And my one who brings me happiness in your love and aids me

5. Ask the tears of my eyes about the sorrows of my anguish
That they may express those concerns, my concerns

6. For the tears from my eyes have an informant that provides for them
So if you ask them, you ask the son of an informant

7. Even though my tears still betray me
And who is he who can narrate the tale of sadness

8. So do not accept from my tears any narration
For they are not trusted with the secret of passion

9. I swore to you I won't betray your covenants
And I gave you, at the oath, my oath

10. Yet here I am, raving mad among you
And far be it from you to approve my madness

11. I gifted you my reason in love willingly
Oh, would that you had left my faith for me

12. I see my body's illness encompassed by your eyelids
So do not, O oppressors, take away my eyelids

13. O beloved ones, I am stingy for your love
And I was never stingy before it

14. So who in creation can I find as a substitute for you
To be my beloved like you and my companion?

15. And who can I accept for my love?
So that my anguish and yearning improve through him

16. Of things, I love what is supreme
And what is inferior is just inclined to inferiority

17. And I shun drinking undistilled water
Not limpid, and eating meat not fat

18. And if I'm told "This is cheap, leave it"
I won't accept but what is precious

19. For I see that if a thing becomes expensive
It has a place in the hearts, settled

20. My love, give me more of the talk I mentioned
That this heart may settle, some settlement

21. And tell me - swear not, for you are truthful
And your word to me is like a thousand oaths

22. By Allah, I did not doubt what you have mentioned
Nor did suspicions about you churn in my thoughts

23. A narration you are relating, I indeed
Have confidence in it and excellent certainty

24. Likewise you'll find me if you test me
My reticence makes my companion happy

25. When I say something I'll do the saying
And my modesty guarantees and vouches for me

26. My cheerfulness gives you glad tidings of my loyalty
And the light of truth shines on my forehead
