1. Did you know when the breeze blew softly,
It conveyed the gossip as it flowed,

2. And spread a secret I always protected,
And a love I considered too noble to be mentioned?

3. A whiff of my reproach appeared on it,
Which softened its edges and perfumed it.

4. The slanderer came while I had blocked my ears,
With a love that repelled the attacking hosts.

5. The slanderer was unaware that my nights were sleepless for your love,
A more enjoyable insomnia than reposing.

6. And he blames me for you, though I do not blame him,
Alas, he never tasted love, nor knew it.

7. With my joy and the sharp swords of slander,
Have you not seen the gazelle, softer and more delicate?

8. His beauty dazzled minds, so whenever he appeared,
They praised and extolled the one who saw him.

9. I embraced the blossoming branch of the banana tree,
And kissed the full moon of beauty revealing itself.

10. And I was seized by a tremor of passion for him,
Which almost divulged the secret love I harbored.

11. And though I concealed my love for him, it was proclaimed
By the yarn which diffused fragrant musk.

12. A yarn softer than the fingertip and youth,
And I made my praise of the prince an exoneration.

13. And on the day I met him, I forgave the sins of time
Thanked him, as I rightly should have.

14. My master, you see between people and him
In status, the difference between Venus and dirt.

He dazzled the angels in heaven with his faith,

16. God is Greatest! How righteous and pure he is!
With an ambition, next to which the shining star,

17. Would be bewildered if it aspired to reach it.
And next to him the blades quiver proudly

18. Like the soft spear and the bejeweled sword.
So if you sought, you would find in him Hatem (the generous)

19. And if you met him, you would meet Antara (the brave).
The sword trembles with glory in his hand,

20. And in it the Samhari strikes with conceit.
And if a man called him, it was as though

21. He called and brought down the rainclouds.
Between the noble and the noble deeds, there is a kinship,

22. And that is why none are loved but him among all people.
They are from a clan that descended from the exalted,

23. In a vast homeland, lofty in ancestry.
They were born as Muslims, except that they were

24. Tempted by the fires of war or the fires of villages.
They rode thoroughbreds to battle, as though

25. Beneath the darkness, they carried the lions of evil.
Each restraint-breaker shone, his face concealed in a mask,

26. Illuminating the darkness when he strode.
And they raced to gain the heights with resolute determination,

27. Where are the stars and flowers compared to their endeavor?
So boast of what your Lord has given you, for it is

28. An honor which will remain recorded through time.
Islam does not deny what you have supported it with,

29. Through you, it has never ceased to seek and call for help.

30. May your approach make the earth joyous, and those upon it,
For the giver of good tidings to Mecca, the mother of villages.

31. So if you see, you will see in him a paradise,
Which would not be pleased save with your open palm’s generosity.

32. And many souls have longed for your nearness,
Almost cracking from ardent longing.

33. And I vowed that if I met you safe,
I would adorn this era’s neck with this jewel.

34. And I would fill vessels with the perfume of praise,
To awaken this fragrant amber before you.

35. There is endless poverty for all the people in it,
Through it, minds are sold and bought.

36. It makes the one who narrates it pile up pillows in glory,
And he remains seated atop the gatherings.

37. My master—the Pride of the Faith—please grant me
A kindness for which there is no like among all people.

38. O you whom when I knew, I knew people
And when you became distant and aloof, I knew them not.

39. A nature, whose consistency I always found in you,
And it hurts me if change in it is attributed to you.

My master, I never abandoned your company falsely,
