1. He swears he'll not betray me, then perjures himself
While I vow not to talk to him, then break my oath

2. And that is my wont, and his wont does not change
So listen, O people, and converse

3. I say to him, “Visit me,” he says “Yes, tomorrow”
Then winks mockingly at me and plays

4. It wouldn’t hurt some people to visit us
And we could talk privately for an hour

5. My beloved, I’m tormented by passion for you
And however long I stay tortured, I’ll endure

6. So take my soul once to give me relief; I wasn’t
Dying repeatedly in daytime, to resurrect

7. For this injustice from you, I’m longsuffering
And hoping kindness from God will transpire

8. I seek refuge for you from this coldness that emerged
Though your fair nature is gentler and warmer

9. People’s suspicions about us grew and they spread
Talk, some good and some rotten

10. Yet in love, my qualities have honored me
Whoever wants to ask about me can investigate
