٤. فنال بها على قدر مناه
وبين القبض والبسط القوام

And the best love has an element of modesty.

٥. واشهى الوصل ما كان اختلاسا
وخير الحب ما فيه احتشام

6. How sweet union would be if something,
Of this life had permanence for pleasure.

٦. وما أحلى الوصال لو انّ شيئا
من الدنيا للذّته دوام

7. I cried over separation in a foreign land,
A stranger may weep over isolation.

٧. بكيت من الفراق بغير أرضي
وقد يبكي الغريب المستهام

8. Do I blame myself for leaving my friends?
Or do I blame those similar to me in youth?

٨. ألائمي وقد فارقت إلفي
أمثلي في صبابته يلام

9. Shall I lose him and not weep for him,
Would that not harden my heart more than a rock?

٩. أأفقده فلا أبكي عليه
يكون ارق من قلبي الحمام

10. Shall I forget him and think I have patience,
Can the keeper ever forget the preserve?

١٠. أأنساه فأحسبه كصبري
وهل ينسى لمحبوب ذمام

11. Gently, some blame is misplaced,
And one like me cannot be scolded into silence.

١١. رويدا إن بعض اللوم لؤم
ومثلي لا ينهنهه الملام

12. On the day he intended to leave, I placed my hand,
Over a heart that flutters with love.

١٢. ويوم نوى وضعت الكف فيه
على قلب يطير به الهيام

13. Had I not wiped my overflowing tears,
Passion would have burnt them.

١٣. ولو لا أن مسحت به جفونا
تفيض دما لأحرقها الغرام

14. The night of his departure was endless as time,
It forgot me and morning recognized it.

١٤. وليل بته كالدهر طولا
تنكر لي وعرفه التمام

15. As if its sky was a meadow that unveiled,
The flowers of flowers and the vine of yearning.

١٥. كأن سماءه روض تجلى
بزهر الزهر والشوق الكمام

16. As if the moon under the clouds was a face,
Ashamed by its beauty and blame.

١٦. كأن البدر تحت الغيم وجه
عليه من ملاحته لئام

17. As if the starry goblet was a cup,
Polished by the flowing wine.

١٧. كأن الكوكب الدري كأس
وقد رق الزجاجة والمدام

18. As if the lines of the glittering constellations,
Were bows and the stars were their arrows.

١٨. كأن سطور أفلاك الدراري
قسي والرجوم لها سهام

19. As if the orbit of the North Star were a bier of a young woman,
Swaying while the stars mourn her.

١٩. كأن مدار قطب بنات نعش
نديّ والنجوم به ندام

20. As if its major stars were young maidens,
Maidens, and the comet was their young man.

٢٠. كأن بناته الكبرى جوار
جوار والسهى فيها غلام

21. As if its minor stars were two cranes,
Arranged on their necks orderly.

٢١. كأن بناته الصغرى جمان
على لباتها منه نظام

22. The planets stayed awake to watch over them,
As if I was a lover and they were the keepers.

٢٢. كواكب بت ارعاهنّ حتى
كأني عاشق وهي الذمام

23. Until the Pleiades ripped open the sleeves,
Of the horizon and the darkness emerged.

٢٣. إلى أن مزقت كف الثريا
جيوب الأفق وانجاب الظلام

24. No sooner had the dawn broken,
Than a sword was unsheathed from it.

٢٤. فما خلت انصداع الفجر إلا
قرابا ينتضى منها حسام

25. And I did not compare the face of the sun,
To any other than yours, O noble king.

٢٥. وما شبهت وجه الشمس إلا
بوجهك أيها الملك الهمام

26. If I likened it to the full moon one day,
The moon has only borrowed light and perfection.

٢٦. وإن شبهته بالبدر يوما
فللبدر الملاحة والتمام
