Strolling in its dew and dusk

2. And it quenched you from the seclusion’s downpour
A pouring rain and garments soaked

3. With clouds that quench you bitterly
That stir the hearts, base and noble

4. Who will I have, after the arid land
That the steeds crossed, wandering in it

5. A cheek the dawn’s sun told of
And the night’s lamps told of its dark beauty

6. The redness of the rosy cheek competes
In beauty, enticing our minds with its roseiness

7. The yellow wrap included the perfect bodies
The tall and short, weak and strong

8. How much I got from it what my soul desired but
The union did not taste sweet to me

9. Days whose clouds did not rain my youth
Except inclining to its guardian and protector

10. And my youth was my intercessor at beauty
And my drinking pals do not change their bitterness

11. But now it has gone, receded and vanished
The cheerfulness and the bloom wilted

12. What is it to me and events not inclined
To the ringing of my old age, its stallion and gelding

13. It passes and there passes its intoxication
And consciousness, happiness and misery

14. And events that have no guide
Forward or back, no prophet

15. Distant places, no east
That knows its end or west

16. The knowledgeable guides through every rugged unknown
Of it to its human or jinn

17. I travel in it and estimate the flashes of visions
That confer the gifts of companionship at times

18. A flash that illuminated from a bare land so
The destitute and wealthy gained from it

19. There is no exaggeration in lofty ambition one day
That an non-Arab or Arab seeks

20. And when souls desire ambitions
A nature of passions thus drives them

21. And I make you an arbiter lodging in love
For a lad who spends the night loving

22. I walk its direction like pilgrims
And its words benefit the linguistic

23. His passion did not lead it to Bilaal
Nor the Umayyad preceded it
