1. Ride swiftly with the steed towards the ruins,
To see there the playgrounds of the gazelles,

2. And ask the ancient ruins about the people
Who once inhabited its grounds.

3. A land that changed after its inhabitants,
And which the hands of time altered its ancientness.

4. They appeared like tree trunks, soft bodied,
Their litters weigh down the backs of the steeds,

5. Like the sand dunes.
Moons fully rounded except

6. That no month diminished their fullness.
When they glance with their eyes and eyelids

7. At the hearts of mankind,
Each one from behind her veil looks as if

8. She were the mother of Nu'man, from 'Afra and Jurah.
Upon them is the freshness of youth as if it were

9. A branch swaying amidst the branches of the wild almond.
A branch, if touched and stirred,

10. The branches would be shy before it.
And it gladdens your heart what is perfected in it

11. Of roses, buds and pomegranates,
Telling of the Khezrana cane, or the cane

12. In its blossoms, softness and colors.
And when you look, your sight divides

13. Into gardens of Paradise and into fires.
Reproach me not for love, for passion

14. Has become for me a creed of creeds.
Does reproach benefit the heart of a man

15. Who is devoted tenderly to his loved ones?
An empty wilderness we never heard of

16. Except for the melodies of tunes.
I passed by its departing people with every

17. Caravan - loads overturned and resigned.
On a dark night while my companions

18. Recite the strangest of tunes,
Reciting poetry in their vigil

19. For such recital is the wont of youths,
Poetry whose words repeat

20. In praising the crowned Amir Bin Sanan,
Standing lofty, highest in rank,

21. Its heights touching the stars.
Oman was adorned by its king and his justice

22. And through him excelled the people of Oman.
O Peerless One, none of the people of India

23. Nor those of Yazin, nor Bahram and Nu'man
Preceded you in their times, and you preceded them

24. On the day of pride in the field of battle.
And I take pride in your people, the best of peoples,

25. For they are most deserving of the throne and crown.
You see them on the day of hardship in battle

26. Snatching the skulls of horsemen,
Snatching the skulls of foes with their swords

27. As planets snatch the shooting stars.
Like lions on the backs of thoroughbreds

28. Swooping with them in war like eagles.
And to you, O sun of the time, a gift

29. Came with the most eloquent speech.
Metered in its composition and prosody

30. Warning you of severity and aggression.
