1. O year that has passed
With fragrance in breaths, a poet sings love songs

2. Greetings O poet
Whose poetry we have lived

3. O newborn whom the world smiled at
And whose lips grinned

4. It kissed you as hope and thought did
Will it be fair to your people so they're pleased?

5. Or will it let them down, O year, if they lived well or evilly?
O newborn whom Basam purified souls for

6. If only we could ensure your future, and make today eternal
Every secret is an inkpot

7. For whoever has a secret
People left captives

8. If only this captivity is captivating
It is most bitterly bitter

9. And bearing despair is bitter
Lost in distressing anxiety until dawn shone

10. They came to you like sprigs when lights slumbered
They cheered when the clock struck

11. And you dazzled them with good tidings
Thankful for luck though luck is sorrowful, so deceiving

12. He does not care if gratitude comes to him or not
He is like an eagle and does not care for the fluttering of birds

13. He is like a towering mountain, not bothered or shaken by boulders
He is like the sea, if raging, not calmed by drops

14. He is like the mighty Caesar, peoples bowed to him
He is like a meadow, never narrowed though filled with thorns

15. He is like the night, never resting, though filled with embers
He is like the air that laughs though it is thunderous

16. He is like the desert lost though secure from betrayal
All this and more

17. He is destined for the moment
What color of it, O year, is for dreams and dens

18. No escape for bewildered captives, no escape
Tell me, O newborn, every revelation from you is pure

19. Is what you tell truth?
Or after today, denied?

20. Make faith for us that is followed, not succeeded by blasphemy
O festival of wishes and people's treasured wishes

21. Be kind to the innocent as much as the guilty
And hell for those who perished as if the universe is a grave

22. Leave them not in the misguidance of ignorance that knows no limit
And bless them as Jesus blessed those who did wrong

23. So they become brethren and good vanquishes evil
