1. What has gotten into you, O gardener,
And your people, what is this pernicious rebellion?

2. Your family endowed you, yet you forgot what
They bestowed and the kindness they pioneered

3. No good in man is from his inheritance
Except the blood that endears man to man

4. You wasted a planting that its buds flourished
And busied yourself with frivolities and songs

5. The night is spent gambling and fornicating
Two filths scattered for Satan

6. And from the bed the day complained, dragging
Its tail as if tainted by the servants

7. Your virtues dwindle and fade from you
While your body clings to sin thereafter

8. What addled the great hopes that for so long
Inspired us and now a blow, suffering?

9. We saw that youth as our refuge
Since the cowardly betrayed us, not the valiant

10. We praised him and confessed to him our love
Graciously, but he failed on the scales

11. We saw the radiant face as if it were
A symbol for every spiritual aspiration

12. And eloquent in gentle speech as if it were
Interpretation of verses from the Quran

13. Around him we circled joyously
Chanting the sweetest faith

14. What confused all these passions
Though their features remain in my mind

15. What has gotten into you, O gardener
And your people, what is this pernicious rebellion?

16. We whispered to you the dreams of high ideals
And now there is only elegy to chant

17. Why did you become so base when you
Were angels and messengers of tenderness?

18. Is it submitting to the foreigner, and how much
Deception in his rounds to win a bet?

19. The stranger holds sway in your home
And permits your dignity by every tongue

20. Torn apart so one defending him is considered
An accomplice of idiocy and disgrace

21. When roses were scattered and snagged
On their thorns the feet and the eyes

22. Is this suicide if you only knew? Do you see
Or surrendered yourself to confusion?

23. Never can a debauched heedless man succeed
Or independently win dignity and stature

24. I still sincerely advise you, so be warned
And avoid falling into abysses

25. But if you refuse, you are the last destroyer
And your memory remains lessons for ages

26. And if you become sober, you gain a second life
And become among the living most reasonable and wise

27. Alas, flattery and pretense will not benefit you
Nor all that insane ego suggests
