1. Has one like me become a disgrace or a danger?
Woe to whoever wreaked havoc in Egypt and commanded it.

2. Every foolish, thieving, vile person has become
A lord, while our finest people have become downcast.

3. Can a whoring pimp be considered honorable,
While the active, intrepid worker is scorned?

4. How their pranks have misled the people,
So they praise those who tormented them proudly!

5. My efforts among them were wasted, and my hopes
Have turned to despair, though I was forgiving.

6. I care for them and constantly strive wakefully
For their good, suffering my expatriation painfully.

7. I deprive myself of sustenance through pure cunning
And ambition, while relishing danger pleasantly.

8. What will history say about us when
The pages of chronicles recount our disgrace fully?

9. What excuse for a people who did not become enraged
At their riders? Is there any betrayal in humiliation?

10. Enough, you who put my name among criminals!
For the likes of me, this is an honor, if at all.

11. I have reason to boast to my peers when they pride
Themselves on wealth and status, or thank fate.

12. If my life has been benevolence and righteousness
Because of you, you qualify me for injustice, provoked.

13. For foolishness, falsehood, and corruption are praiseworthy,
And the noblest people are those who suffered and betrayed!
