1. He who spurns enmity with the noble
And extending friendship to the vile

2. Both matters are flawed and lofty
Is the purity of living above the notion of a foe

3. So if enmity is imposed upon you by force
Then cling to the generous manners of the noble folk

4. I prefer that I suffer with my manners
Over vulgarity in fancied bliss

5. And he who thinks me mad in my pride
Is neither wise nor prudent

6. For within me are worlds that did not fail me
And have not been lost to the mindless night

7. For there is divinity in my seclusion
My ally, guide, or boon companion

8. Poetry flows to me in everything
The murmur of melody in steadfast silence

9. And my contemplations have encompassed
The diverse arts in a spellbinding whole

10. And easiest among them is the brook’s babble around me
And the birds’ singing with the breeze

11. And the meadows’ smiles are flashes
With the blooms' dew and lush vegetation

12. And the waterwheels' sighs are more poignant
Than an orphan's tears

13. And the sea's waves clapping loudly
Like an arrogant giant applauding the servile

14. And the sands' hues on the dunes
Are gems for both rich and destitute

15. And the water's spray on the waterfall
As if to conquer it like a defiant devil

16. And the army of bees around me in their quests
Are kisses for the beautiful blooms

17. And the echoes of the fields are radiant
With wine in their intimate display

18. And the grazing beasts as if they reign
Over a mighty kingdom

19. And the stars' glimpses behind clouds
Like the generous palm's concealed treasure

20. And the sun's inspiration as it pours a dream
Diverse in scattering and arrangement

21. All these are some of my company
And my treasure when my foe reviled me

22. As for anything else, it is too noble
And was not grasped by the assessment of the Wise
