1. The loftiness of yearning still continues to rise
Until it reached the summits of the heavens, then ascended higher
١. شُرافَةُ الشَّوقِ لا زالت تَطولُ إلى
أنْ طاوَلتْ قُممَ الأفلاكِ ثمََّّ عَلتْ
2. And probed the heavens of conscience for us
Suns of passion dispelled the darkness
٢. واسْتَطْلعتْ في سَمواتِ الضَّميرِ لنا
شُموسُ وجدٍ أفانينَ الظَّلامِ جَلتْ
3. And tore apart the soul of a slave with love
With what sin was my beloved one killed?
٣. ومزَّقَتْ نفْسَ عبدٍ بالغرامِ عَفا
بأيِّ ذنبٍ إذاً مَوؤودَتي قُتلتْ
4. My eyes shed tears for God for so long they streamed
And from you my eyelids for so long they wept
٤. لله أدّمعُ عينٍ طالما هَطلتْ
ومنكَ أجفانُ عيْنٍ طالما فعَلتْ
5. An eyelash that cut with white swords
A moan for utter annihilation that connected
٥. ورَمشةٌ بالصِقَّالِ البيضِ قَدْ قطعَتْ
وأنَّةٌ للفَناءِ المَحضِ قَدْ وصلَتْ
6. A sigh that filled the universe flaming
And it didn’t diminish, and in my heart alone it blazed
٦. وزَفرةٌ ملأَ الأكْوانَ لاهِبُها
وما سرَتْ وبِقلبي وحدهُ اشْتعلَتْ
7. A presence from my heart is present in you
And from your side not once did my eye distract
٧. وحضْرةٌ من فُؤادي فيكَ حاضرةٌ
وعن جَنابكَ طرْفَ العينِ ما اشْتغلَتْ
8. A melody within my reason that made it rational
And the rule of your love on its fringes it intellectualized
٨. ورنَّةٌ ضمْنَ عَقلي لَوعتي عقَلتْ
وحُكمَ حُبِّكَ في أطرافهِ عقِلَتْ
9. And a torment that made my soul frenzied and from passion
For the beauty of your face from all creation it was distracted
٩. ولوعةٌ أذْهلَتْ روحي وعن شغَفٍ
بنورِ حُسنكَ عن كلِّ الوَرَى ذهِلتْ
10. And a thought that learned your meaning when it envisioned
The meanings from you and transmitted the pillars of love
١٠. وفكْرةٌ علِمتْ معْناكَ حين رَوَتْ
عنكَ المَعاني وأسْنادَ الهَوَى نقَلتْ
11. And a cry that seized my heart and with it it quaked
And an ambition through you my Master that never weakened
١١. وصَيْحةٌ أخذتْ قلبي فريعَ بها
وهمَّةٌ بك يا مولايَ ما بطِلتْ
12. And a want except through you faded and in you atop
The scale with the masters of abstinence it weighed heaviest
١٢. وبُغيةٌ دونكُمْ خفَّتْ وفيكَ على
ميزانِها بينَ أربابِ النُّهى ثقُلتْ
13. My soul is ransomed for you and it knows all its desire
And if it is in its pursuit ignorant
١٣. روحي فِداكَ وتدري كلَّ بُغيتها
وإنْ تكنْ هي في مَطْلوبِها جهِلتْ
14. A resolve it resolved until when it ascended
Beyond grasping your meaning in its humanity it descended
١٤. عزيمةً عزمَتْ حتَّى إِذا صَعِدتْ
عن دركِ مَعناكَ في ناسوتِها نزلتْ
15. And a free soul from the cosmos that refused
For your face from it the essence was sacrificed
١٥. ونفسِ حُرٍّ عن الأكوانِ قَدْ عزَفتْ
لأجلِ وجهكَ منها الذَّاتُ قَدْ بُذِلتْ
16. And what was stored for you in my heart its treasures
For fervor never opened nor locked
١٦. وما انْطوى لك في قلبي خزائنُهُ
للهْفِ ما فُتحتْ يوماً ولا قُفِلتْ
17. And a clay before its markings arose
For your love in the hidden realm was molded
١٧. وطينةٍ قبلَ أن قامتْ عَلائمُها
على غرامِكَ في طيِّ العَما جُبلتْ
18. And the secret within me from the ancient
Covenant and secrets of love it encompassed
١٨. وما السَّريرةُ من لُبِّي عليهِ من ال
عهْدِ القديمِ وأسرارِ الهَوَى اشْتملَتْ
19. The glances of my eyes except your meaning never glanced
Nor its tears except for it ever streamed
١٩. أنْظارُ عَيني سِوى مَعناكَ ما نَظرتْ
ولا مدامعُها إِلاَّ لهُ هملَتْ
20. So look to the state of one whose circumstances debased
O you whose meanings in all affairs supreme
٢٠. فانظرْ لِحالِ امرءٍ أوضاعُهُ سفِلتْ
يا من مَعانيهِ في كلِّ الشُؤُنِ علَتْ
