1. The signs on the tablets were inscribed with the pen,
And were sealed in the hearts of the people of grace.

2. Your love is mingled with my soul, its secret
Trembled through me with all gentleness.

3. I sigh with a heart that is wounded,
And draw the sighs from myself timidly.

4. I weep when the breeze blows in denial,
While among my people my loved ones ignored me.

5. Those close to me opposed me greatly,
While my enemies concurred with my difficulty.

6. And I cried over those who blamed me with mercy,
And departed from the ropes of accord.

7. What confusion, shock and calamity!
What agony that ruined all my joys!

8. They say, "Do not grieve, and be stoic,"
For concealing passion is the way of the gnostics.

9. I said, "My sighing against my will exposed my secrets,
And I am no gnostic."

10. Tears flowed down my cheeks from the sound of its surge,
And the rushing tide acquainted me with passion.

11. O temptation of lovers, have mercy on the heartsick
Who call out longingly for intimacy.

12. Comfort him gently with a glance of union,
Even if it is for a blinking of an eye.

13. Your train is unfurled over every lover,
And your righteousness extends to every gnostic.

14. With You I am independent of all events,
And became the Imam of all denominations.

15. A secret from God supported me as a victor,
And strengthened my heart with the tidings it sends.

16. The people hoped from me in every occasion,
Like the downpour, a handful of the abundant rain.

17. By God’s praise I inherited you, having graciously
Stripped off the darkness of veils.

18. From you I have a spirit mingled with my spirit,
With mysteries that come to me like a dawning star.

19. I witness your beauty in every challenger,
Even if it is veiled by the morning mists.

20. I repose in security, honor and protection,
In your door’s shade, gentle and wide.

21. No sooner do I rise than providence watches me,
Your eye that tends me, blotting out my fears.

22. Your nobility and kindness are ever close,
Blotting my selfish pleasures from me.

23. Your white garments veil me from the world,
So I remain shrouded in those garments.
