لِمُحبٍّ مُتَيَّمٍ مِن حَبيبِ
2. Our eyes lent all beauty
And our noses lent all fragrance
٢. قَد أَعارَت عُيونَنا كُلّ حُسنٍ
وَأَعارَت أُنوفَنا كلَّ طيبِ
3. Some for the lover, some for the loved
For the lover and for the loved
٣. بَعضُها عاشِقٌ لِبَعضٍ فَبَعضٌ
لِمُحبٍّ وَالبَعضُ لِلمَحبوبِ
4. So when the whitened beloved
Yellows, the rest yellow in sorrowful gloom
٤. فَالحَبيبُ المُبيَضُّ مِنها إِذا
اصفَرَّ سواهُ اِصفِرارَ صَبٍّ كَئيبِ
5. For them is a third, spying
Telling their love like a preacher
٥. لَهُما ثالثٌ أَنافَ كواشٍ
قامَ يَحكي هواهُما كَالخَطيبِ
6. So the two and he, in all meanings
Are the beloved, the lover, the chaperone
٦. فَهُما وَهوَ في جَميعِ المَعاني
كَحبيبٍ وَعاشقٍ ورقيبِ
