1. My heart awoke, now sober and remorseful,
Forsaking vanity, youth, music and revelry,

2. I used to love her company, but she denied me,
The sin of another yet her grievance was never allayed,

3. So I overcame my passion for good sense’s sake
When my temples turned white through sorrow's ashen pall,

4. Then she sent me a message, seeking reunion:
“God’s rule,” she said, “how could one not repent?”

5. Who is the go-between to whom truth is revealed?
Today she shuns me more than ever.

6. Had I not weaned him from the one we loved,
I would not have abandoned wine.

7. She sent a messenger not to the devoted lover
But one who found reward—and I’ll not leave reward.

8. With words that blamed a passion-maddened man—
A lover whose heartache left him mute.

9. He came to her straightaway, running,
Disobeying, in his love for song, good company.

10. I disobeyed good advice about you, I confess,
As my friend warned me not to doubt.

11. So this morning I was visited with something
That shook my being and made me a marvel.
