1. When we met and felt secure,
Fear and danger gone from view,

2. I took her hand in mine and placed it
Upon a heart that shook, fearing our parting.

3. She said to friends, convinced now
Of what she faced, “He is not true!”

4. They said, “Can eyes that know no pain
Weep so? He stays awake through the long night.”

5. She said, “I see this is but longing. It was
A heart empty of love that brought my tears.”

6. They said, “We know he does not lie,
Though he seems given to fantasy.”

7. They left us alone. Her eyes now streamed
With tears that fell in a steady flow.

8. She said, “Have mercy! Leave me not
With him! You know his mind is cracked.”

9. They said, “Hush now. We cannot thwart
His will toward you. Know that is best.”

10. She said, “Then do not go. I fear—
I swear it—being alone with him!”
