1. Grief stirred the heart because of her, a passing whim
And pressing cares, as well as the memory,
١. هاجَ حُزنَ القَلبِ مِنها طائِفٌ
وَهُمومٌ حاضِراتٌ وَذِكَر
2. And the words of the cheek when she faced
The direction of the caravan, and her eyes were pearls
٢. وَمَقالُ الخَودِ لَمّا واجَهَت
جِهَةَ الرَكبِ وَعَيناها دِرَر
3. O Abu Al-Khattab, you have not burdened us
With an obligation wherein is toil and sleeplessness
٣. يا أَبا الخَطّابِ ما جَشَّمتَنا
حِجَّةً فيها عَناءٌ وَسَهَر
4. Except with the righteousness of Allah, only a glance
From you that to me bears no significance
٤. بَعدَ بِرِّ اللَهِ إِلّا نَظرَةً
مِنكُمُ لَيسَ لَها عِندي خَطَر
5. I said you have not burdened us with love for you
O daughter of the two best, most painful and bitter
٥. قُلتُ ما جَشَّمتِنا مِن حُبِّكُم
يا اِبنَةَ الخَيرَينِ أَدهى وَأَمَر
6. And indeed my heart increased in sorrow
At her words to me, "Conceal my secret, O Omar"
٦. وَلَقَد زادَ فُؤادي حَزَناً
قَولُها لي إِرعَ سِرّي يا عُمَر
7. I said, "You are the thing whose secret should be concealed
And whose love should be granted, and made easy"
٧. قُلتُ أَنتِ الشَيءُ يُرعى سِرُّهُ
وَيُؤاتى في هَواهُ وَيُسَر
