1. Sweeter and more healing for us than the rapture of music,
And more delicious than sipping grape wine,
١. أَلَذُّ وَأَشْفَى لَنَا مِنْ طَرَبْ
وَأَطْيَبُ مِنْ رَشْفِ ماءِ العِنَبْ
2. Is a supple figure who turns his back to leave.
Your generosity suffices to humble all seekers.
٢. تَبَذَّبُ سَاقٍ أَدَارَ العُقَارَ
يَكْفِيكَ بِالْبَذْلِ ذُلَّ الطَّلَبْ
3. He showed us a ruby-like beauty,
And clothed her in a garment of gold.
٣. أَدَارَ لَنا ذَات ياقُوتَةٍ
وَأَلْبَسَها خلَعاً مِنْ ذَهَبْ
4. He adjusted the rest of her features,
And sprinkled on her the pearls of love.
٤. وعدَّلَ سائِرَ سَوْرَاتِها
وذَرَّ عَلَيْهَا دُيُوبَ الحَبَبْ
5. Her beauty is perfect, yet
She ignores sins and the lure of doubt.
٥. ومُعْتَدِلِ الحُسْنِ لكِنَّهُ
يُخَطِّي الذُّنُوبَ وحُبَّ الرِّيبْ
6. She is entirely composed of charms,
With the magic of her tongue and the grace of literature.
٦. تَاَلَّفَ مِنْ خُدَعٍ كُلُّهُ
بِسِحْرِ اللِّسانِ وظَرْفِ الأدَبْ
7. We sported with her and delighted in her,
And together we were the reins of rapture.
٧. لَهَوْنَا بِهَا وَنَعِمْنا بِهِ
فَكانا جَمِيعاً عِنَانَ الطَّرَبْ
8. But when he sighed from his drunkenness,
And I made him drink what he had already drunk,
٨. فَلَمَّا تَرَنَّحَ مِنْ سُكْرِهِ
وجَرَّعْتُهُ فَضْلَ مَا قَدْ شَرِبْ
9. I diffused from his diffusion a musky fragrance,
And whispered to him privately in wonder.
٩. تَنَشَّرْتُ مِنْ نَشْرِهِ مسكَةً
ونَاجَيْتُ فَتْكِي بِسِرٍّ عَجَبْ
10. How many nights did she oblige
Our desires with the joy of intimacy!
١٠. وَكَمْ مِنْ ليالٍ لَنا أَسْعَفَتْ
مَطالِبَنا بِسُرُورِ الغَلَبْ
