1. My yearning grew more intense with tears
As if its spring were in the source of maladies,

2. I’ve neither seen nor heard of any thirst
More severe than what comes after joy and quenching.

3. What more can an invalid wish for with you?
I see that health avails not against illness,

4. And that complaining and humiliation
Can compensate for patience, so replace excuses with grace,

5. You've fallen in love with the daughter of Nawā’
Whose company you shall never part from,

6. No whiskered lion smiles at its sweetheart
Nor does the camel bare its teeth to the nursing she-camel.

7. I pretended my body wasn’t worn out by sickness
Nor my heart deranged.

8. So I said, “If I’m not like you wanted
Then I'm the subject of comparison.”

9. She said, “Take what you give and be content with it
If you say that love is mere words without action.”

10. O just ruler, regarding your rule—
This is the final word, not what you thought for me,

11. Look from the earthly moon to see
My state, and leave me be, from Mars or Saturn!

12. Coffee, when the month of fasting evicted it
From a faith, so it sought refuge in heresies,

13. Until it sought protection in Shawwāl, so he gave it refuge,
And Shawwāl almost stumbled from haste.

14. When it saw me before we parted
It learned how I sought refuge in the son of `Alī.

15. Be well and you’ll receive enough from Him, and stay
A neighbor who brings you untiring glory.

16. And look out for yourself, if you try for a third—
A knight’s deed is never undone!

17. O obsessed with the heights, ceaseless is his
Bond with you, without boredom or weariness

18. Wandering in yearning when a herd was mentioned
As if its horses bid you welcome with forelocks.

19. If you capture a channel, then its destruction is due
To the one you rode out to, not the uninvolved.

20. And if it moves from land it stayed rooted in
Like the drawing and ruins of buildings.

21. Why drive the beasts away and then drive them off
As if you’re the herder of horses and camels!

22. And I see nothing you’ve gained
Besides neverending praise heaped upon burdens.

23. I see gifts pouring down so thick
The eye’s glimpse cannot penetrate their gaps,

24. So beware for yourself of what you’ve given away
In an error that throws individuals into the masses.

25. If the sun of nonexistence deserts you O son of Ḥaydarah
I am but the clouds of generosity in shades,

26. No good in a garment its owner doesn't wear out
Except the robes I clothe you in from my stores—

27. For they are the ornament of Dunyā and her beauty
For the remainder of life, not its first days!
