1. If his soul despairs, and if he becomes hopeless,
And is pleased to withdraw into seclusion,

2. That is because the generous people have turned away
From their generosity, thinking it a mistake,

3. To the point that giving greetings of peace
Has become, to the one who intends it, dangerous and hazardous.

4. And they are unanimous in their stance - none has breached
The consensus except the pure son of 'Aṭā,

5. Who restrains his hand from praise and thinks good
Thoughts of one whose wealth was once abundant,

6. And the critics judge him as if they are
His equal, without distinction between them.

7. He rose high when his character came near,
And many a thing ascends when it descends lower.

8. How can the radiance of his hopes shine through
The gloom, now that the two have intermingled?

9. It is as if Time, when it appointed him,
Singled him out for generosity and stipulated conditions.

10. The habit of Fate is not to bring about good,
So it has no energy left for him.
