ولئن أقامني الزمان

1. Although fate has left me in the grasp
Of non-existence and debt,

١. ولئن أقامني الزما
نُ بخطَّتَي عُدمٍ ودَينِ

2. My people acted as though
The King of Rome stood between us.

٢. فلأنَّ قَومي حالَ مَل
كُ الرُّومِ بَينَهمُ وبَيني

3. To them death seemed
An empty-handed, bright-faced woman.

٣. تَبدو المنيَّةُ دُونَهم
زَرقاءَ طَلقاءَ اليَدينِ

4. Justice ruled grief among us
As justly as Judge Abul-Husain.

٤. عَدلَ التَّفجُعُ بيننا
في الحُكِم عَدلَ أبي الحسَينِ

5. So they grieved in their hearts for me
And wept from their eyes,

٥. فكأنَّهم جَزِعُوا بقَل
بي للنَّوى وبَكَوا بِعَيني

6. Offspring of the best of mankind,
Of manners and dew and comfort.

٦. سَبطُ الخَليقَةِ والطَّري
قَةِ والنَّدى والراحَتَينِ

7. So it was as though between glory
And them were joined the two bright stars.

٧. فكأنَّهُ والمجَد بَي
نَهُما اقترِانُ الفَرقَدَينِ
