1. The rope of passion lies discarded on the ground
Yet she continues restless with the rider

2. While you tirelessly pursue their trail
Urged on by the tears of the weeping eye

3. Turn back, for the steeds of passion
Will never catch up with the robber and the robbed

4. O director of the moments that oblige me
To neglect my duties

5. I advise you kindly of the malady
That afflicts them, and know it is my companion

6. A timid doe in my eyelids, a graceful maiden
Denied to her suitor

7. She arrived but they forbade her sister
A sip that would shine on the drinker's lip

8. They reproached me for what they possess
Like one pressured to repent but not remorseful

9. They brought a religion they claimed
Came from an Adam made of clinging clay

10. I said, "Detain your Shaykh, for the days of my life
Are not those of one who returns"

11. And my saying I had repented
Brought, from the two sons of Abi al-Taib

12. The withholders, the granters - see
Can the withholder be called the granter?

13. They have no Paradise, their two widths
That may be guarded by one who roams around

14. Each a lofty Ali in lineage
When ending in a proud, unattached lineage

15. So leave him to what you see as
Arduous, rough-edged

16. To the wished-for one, called by it
Known by its coldness, suitable

17. How they lied about many a truthful warning
And believed many a false hope

18. And each who profits by speaking
Merely dictates to a scribe

19. Both profit by their deed
But virtue belongs only to the doer
