1. O Layqis when we met this year
Were our aversions to a slave or because of what we fear?

2. It was not out of hatred or rejection
But it was out of ignorance of you and lack of connection

3. We never wronged you or acted unjustly
Never ripped your veils or anything made taboo

4. O sons of Mundhir ibn Ubaydan al-Asadi
Glory one day will vanish all dreams already

5. Why did you command a slave to satirize a people
Who did no wrong yet were noble and eminent

6. She who wears down heads with favors
Her name reaches all the people and her fame savors

7. The day of Hajar and what was revealed to you
As sparks flew from its edges amidst embers anew

8. An ally dwelt therein, who denied punishment
So the palm trunks exposed the ones who sin

9. You see them like dry wood with fires pouring
Black interspersed, rising up roaring

10. Then with the eye a disgrace that darkens the sun
A day whose darkness will never be undone

11. When Shayban came to you at dawn
With a ram whose front you can see at morn

12. So we marched upon them early as the roses bloom
With men like lions tried in war and gloom

13. And horses that would never refrain to dare
We do not spare them from the swords or care if we despair

14. An hour when midday is most afire
As a shepherd folds his flock and does not tire

15. With youth you see not weary or bored
And elders hopeful with dreams still stored

16. Then they turned back at Al-Hafeeza so forlorn
As the hot wind scatters dust at morn

17. That day on your mountain for us and you
Was a blessing, had you thanked the endowment anew

18. And when the smoke reminded of dark low clouds
Bringing heavy rains in flooded crowds

19. For the lighters flash over the valley’s lights
When their passion makes them burn so bright

20. With swords in winter they appear
Feeding every hungry soul without fear

21. And tents like hills, horses and arms of red
Protecting from arrows overhead

22. In a frontier fort, raiders came forth
When the dust merged with the warriors of worth

23. We were the ones pursuing the rest
When the virgins displayed their gowns at their best
