1. She came fluttering like threads of silk, or more elegant,
And inspired not the tune of jesting nor the leaf.

2. She came after the beloved had crossed the meadow yearning,
A brother in love, whose passion almost made her take flight.

3. So I greeted when I saw her, infatuated with youth,
By God, how beautiful that meeting was!

4. A gazelle in beauty that draws the heart to love,
A heart that did not care for gazelles was certainly in misery.

5. An oryx whose meadow was the garden,
And tomorrow's sun was her lover's heart's horizon.

6. My tender heart is tortured in its passion for her,
I asked for her torment though, such is the law of love.

7. You tease like the full moon in splendor and rising,
Your eyes have wrought destruction, so be gentle I implore!

8. Gently! You have slain the heart of a loving captive,
A prisoner of virtuous love who did not ask for freedom.

9. By the smoothness of her eyelids and tan of her neck - gently!
As much as you reproached and pelted me.

10. Is it not time that I enjoy union and am fulfilled?
Yes, it is time that I gain union for that is my right!

11. You ordered me to show patience - how can I show patience,
When separation left no patience nor anything remaining?

12. By your cheeks what hopes have been destroyed in my heart!
By your eyes how much of you I have seen and missed!

13. My friend, enough! Do not increase blame,
For I see a difference between you and I.

14. So leave off love that clung through passion.
I am possessed by beauty and charm with strong fetters.

15. For I have a way in love you do not know,
And difficult for one like you to tread.

16. I yearn for the white oryx as if she
Were to me the appointed time and the tryst.

17. And were it not for her shyness and brilliant smile,
My eyes would not keep gazing upon the stars and lightning.

18. Greet the quarter I knew in my youth,
And shun it, for the mark has granted it beauty.

19. An abode where the soft breeze was as though
It were the cloak of the righteous, virtuous, God-fearing man.

20. He is the prominent, famous, excellent poet,
Who transcended in literature, reaching the utmost peak.

21. A man of letters - if Suhban and Wael contested him
They would acknowledge his superior eloquence.

22. And if the eloquence of Ma'ari and Iyad were compared to him,
His understanding would humble them and his speech defeat them.

23. Before the people of literature he is the most refined,
To him go the reins of eloquence completely.

24. Through him the justice of rule became sublime,
As the position of judge raised him when he attained it.

25. O excellent in literature! Indeed you are its crown,
Unique in verse and most guided in truth.

26. There came to you from an ardent admirer this poem,
My heart desires that it have some subtlety.

27. Show me, O rising sun of noble virtue,
Some clear meanings - before it I knew not poetry's truth.

28. If one day I recited to a lovely maiden,
She would wear no other necklace or choker but it.

29. The stars of flowers envy the pearls of its diction,
And its meaning makes the breeze jealous when it is soft.

30. Its beginning pleased me, and its ending delighted me,
And from its beauty I could not tell which was more exquisite.

31. O rising place of sublime merit!
Through you the glory of composition is magnified.

32. That without the waters of love and affection was not sated.
So flow freely the streams of your generosity upon it,

33. And allow versifying, boldness, and subtlety.
