1. Egypt appeared to us in all its beauty
The face of joy and good news departed from us

2. The flowers of the gardens bloomed enchantingly
Reviving my heart with their flourishing blossoms

3. The dunes lean with their bending branches
Swaying drunkenly from their abundant growth

4. The coral of the Nile’s water refuses pearls
Adorned with its green emeralds

5. Its gardens have become saying
O eyes of me, where is Al Rashafa and the bridge

6. In it is what souls desire for it has become
A paradise with abundant flowing springs

7. Its homes are dignity and security, its expanse
Its waters are honey and its plains are perfume

8. It adorned itself while fate shot its arrows
Blocking with its hands what fate cast forth

9. And stretched out to us the carpets of joy and clarity
After its woeful times and floral days

10. And inspired in us from the beauty of its people
Pages still read by the mind

11. Thus the times of bliss were pleasing in its shade
And the hours of joy – for my life they are life

12. I regret the home of my beloved in Lebanon
Watered by rains and early drops

13. Those gazelles did not cease in its meadows
Lined with enchanting houri eyes

14. Those slender waists swaying
With the rhythm of beauty envied by the full moon

15. Hidden between the boats and the reeds
Kindling the embers in the heart of their lover

16. They did not deliver to the beauty that I
Am captive to her love, fettered without escape

17. My liver yearns for her though she is remote
Not accustomed to patience though patience is praised

18. I refuse, when night falls, to find solace
In remembering her - does memory even help?

19. Ask the roe deer of the bent branch above her lip
In the heart of her lover there is a wound from her wound

20. Does she know what I have suffered from passion?
Is she aware of what separation has done?

21. My tears and wailing but the hand of fate
In their fingers holds vast oceans

22. The people of the sea are pearls and nobles
And true loyalists, though loyalty is their way

23. None but refined and cultured prophets
We see them foremost in lineage and rank

24. In Germany they excelled in mathematics
Their radiant books adorned with poetry

Strands of pearls their ink is the sea
