1. In life's events a person has hopes,
And for misfortunes there are feet and forelocks,

2. And every night has from itself a magic,
And for dawns among the days are origins,

3. And while a person turns happily,
There is also hardship just as prosperity comes.

4. Indeed most of time brings safety and enjoyment,
So do not be fooled for in abundance there is scarcity.

5. So be with time in safety and enjoyment,

6. In it there is neither pureness nor murkiness,
Neither pleasures last nor sorrows,

7. And do not say this one prevailed with wisdom,
Nor say that one fate made ignorant.

8. How many an ignorant in the highest ranks prevailed,
And how many a wise below the ignorant were judged.

9. A judgment from God that blinded the wise,
And about it prolonged were the sayings and words.

10. As if time from wisdom and ignorance,
Is composed, and in both states it acts.

11. The ignorant rise after the time of ignorance,
And minds rise up when the time is wise.

12. So patience if you do not find ease,
For patience is halal and departing.

13. And say to a loved one who cried the day of departure in passion,
You have neither horse to ride nor wealth.

14. For honor is found in the resting place of good deeds,
So do not insist on blame or be fooled by ruins.

15. If cups of wine are poured in a land,
In another, honey and water pour.

16. And if a homeland becomes troubled in its state,
Other homelands and states become pure.

17. So roam the deserts and the best company are the ascetics,
Tied down or roaming freely.

18. And steadfast, events do not shake his position,
A heart strengthened from severity of great deeds.

19. And lead a moaning she-camel amidst raging heat,
With deserts and plains as her tail.

20. She breaks through the void as the clouds do the sky,
And in her interior a flaming fire kindles.

21. The wind tears above the water speeding,
And every wind that came to it she subdues.

22. When it smiles amidst the green it has a magic,
That kills it in the secret of a long wail.

23. Do not despair my fellow anguished of relief,
That comes to you from where minds do not expect.

24. Reassure yourself that God is most generous,
And restrain yourself for if calamities befell.

25. Who is it that has never been hit by misfortune,
For all people are in those examples.

26. Indeed the world is vulnerable to misfortunes,
Neither brave nor weak are safe from it.

27. Do not blame time, for time itself is not to be blamed,
And abundant are the sayings regarding it.

28. Rather time is but the actions of men, so if
You transgress, time is attributed with deeds.

29. My friends, spare me your blame,
And be concise, for this blame is deadly.

30. Blaming after failing is of no use,
What benefit, and grief intensifies.

31. For the sun is escorted by dusk after noon
And the moon subjected to disappearance and waning.

32. I wish I knew, how are you and Lebanon,
Let me know, and the abode of the little moon.

33. And a people who sacrificed themselves,
And a people for them neither fell nor declined.

34. I wish that which befell the cowardly and failed,
Would befall a people of wrath and severity.

35. Ask the high and lofty cypresses, does leadership,
Belong to any but the wise and patient?

36. Those who lost it, the high are witness,
As are years and generations.

37. As if amidst the glory of excellence, a full moon,
Around it stars and meteors revolved.

38. As if with them and war raging,
A lion over its cubs.

39. O breeze blowing from the prairie of Lebanon
Weakened, never harmed by affliction.

40. It breezed so the night breathed its breeze,
Lavished by sincere generosity pouring.

41. Do they remember the pact between them and us,
Or forgot it with what they attained?

42. One may grow bored of what is at hand,
And when distant, remembers and the eyelid flows.

43. If you say patience, for the heart in its youth,
Patience is beautifully painful and arduous,

44. I refused between love and patience,
Chiding me regarding patience and love hastily and slowly.

45. I entrust God with loved ones whose traces faded,
After our separation, gazelles fate has afflicted.

46. And the full moon of beauty consoled
When it complained of passionate sorrow.
