لعمرك يا أخا الأشواق أنا

1. My life, O brother of yearning, we are
My heart from the pain of separation, we are

١. لعمرك يا أخا الأشواق أنّا
فؤادي من اليم البيت أنّا

2. And the arrows of events have struck my heart
So it fluttered like a wounded bird when it sang

٢. وسهم الحادثات أصاب قلبي
فاثر بالحشاشة حين رنا

3. May God curse time, for it has transgressed
Upon us with separation, and it has picked fruits greedily

٣. لحى اللَه الزمان لقد تعدى
علينا بالفراق وقد تجنّى

4. And made me far from the home of those
Whom I love, O brother of yearning I moaned

٤. وصيرني بعيد الدار عمن
بحبهم أخو الأشواق جنا

5. I stay up conversing with the moon of the nights
Remembering them when the night pulls its garment

٥. أبيت مسامراً قمر الدياجي
بذكراهم إذا ما الليل جنا

6. And I shed my tears at dawn whenever
I hear the warbling of the bold nightingale

٦. وانثر أدمعي سحراً إذا ما
سمعت سويجع الأثلات غنّى

7. And I have a liver burning with passion
Before the separation, so how will it be when we part

٧. ولي كبدٌ مضرمةٌ بوجدٍ
قبيل البعد كيف إذا افترقنا

8. And meeting the beloved only increases longing
For seeing him, so how will it be when he is absent from us

٨. وكان لقا الحبيب يزيد شوقاً
لرؤياه فكيف وغاب عنا

9. I remembered the homes and their dwellers
So you are my soul and my heart sighed

٩. تذكرت الديار وساكنيها
فأنت مهجتي والقلب حنا

10. And a lone nightingale in a vale stirs me
On a bending branch, bending as it bent

١٠. وهيجني مغردةً صدوحٌ
على غصن تثنّى ان تثنّى

11. Sobbing and no beloved has left it
And its heart was not filled with meaning

١١. تنمح ولم يفارقها حبيبٌ
ولم يك قلبها صباً معنّى

12. And you have the right, O the trustee of my heart
Of the pleasures after you I have denied them

١٢. وحقك يا أمين الحب قلبي
من اللذات بعدك ماتها

13. And if there is distance between our bodies
Then nearness is in our souls

١٣. وإن يكُ بين جسمينا بعاد
فإن القرب بالأرواح منا

14. Perhaps He who has destined separation for us
Will bless us with meeting the loved ones, if He favors us

١٤. عسى من بالفراق قضى علينا
بطيب لقا الأحبة إن يمنا

15. There has come to me from you prose, a necklace
Of precious pearls, eloquent in words and meaning

١٥. أتاني منك نظمٌ عقد درّ
ثمين راق ألفاظاً ومعنى

16. So it gave me life with the memory of the Best Master
With the memory of His excellent attributes, it preoccupied us

١٦. فأحياني بذكرى خير مولى
بذكر صفاته الغراء همنا

17. So my longing for kissing the hand of the generous prince
Who has surpassed in the two honors, meanings

١٧. فوا شوقي للثم يدي أميرٍ
كريمٍ فاق بالشرفين معنا

18. And his son Khalil, my Master full of bounty
Resembling the full moon in brilliance and beauty

١٨. ونجليه الخليل أبي المعالي
يحاكي البدر إشراقاً وحسنا

19. And our Master the Trustee, whom he called Faithful
And God granted him what he wished

١٩. ومولانا الأمين دعاه أمنٌ
وجاد له الإله بما تمنى

20. May God make their sway last with might
And increase their elevation with glory and safety

٢٠. أدام اللَه سؤددهم بعزٍّ
وزاد علاهمُ مجداً وأمنا

21. And extend them with favor and happiness
As long as the birds sing

٢١. ومدهم بإقبالٍ وسعدٍ
مدى الأيام ما طيرٌ تغنى
