1. Your beauty, a veil cannot obscure,
Nor can aloofness hide your love so pure,

2. O slender waisted like a fawn distressed,
So fragile he seemed ready to break in two,

3. Did your eyelids know, deep in my heart,
What farewell did, when we said adieu?

4. I did not ask if he still owned your heart,
Which loss and waste had claimed as their due,

5. If patience flees from a heart that grieves,
Then love cannot be torn out too,

6. My soul by his love is forever possessed,
Through all my days, bliss and anguish ensue,

7. A lover whose charm makes me his slave,
And sickness and guile in his eyes imbue,

8. In his figure I find my refuge sure,
And terror profound in his glance I view,

9. A gazelle he is, of the noble Turks,
In whom beauty and grace peer through,

10. My heart and eyes have made his abode,
Why then, did they not make him their due?

11. You wrap yourself in veils, as a screen,
Yet veils and shawls are no shield for you,

12. Can veils stop the darts cast by amorous eyes?
Midst tents do they not find their way through?

13. Can skirts block the sway of a bending branch?
For it, in the world, free reign is its due,

14. In our souls we hide his love,
Fierce flames, a secret, concealed from view,

15. I met passion modestly, pliantly,
But it came with what I could not subdue,

16. It watered the home of loved ones with tears,
Without the love of loved ones, tears won't do,

17. And scented its gardens with fragrant love,
With it are perfumes homes imbue,

18. Youth brought it the longing of ardent youth,
His feud with the Divine, is eternal too,

19. An abode where roamed graceful gazelles,
Feared by lions, though brave and true,

20. Moons that illuminate crumbled walls,
While for lovers, only pain is their due,

21. When times are hard, be patient,
For days can be narrow and broad too,

22. Do not weary of a sorrowful event,
For events have conflicts and harmony too,

23. If you visit the ruins, though my burial,
Is not blessed as ascending the heights anew,

24. He is the rain, forever sought,
By all literary men, as their due,

25. A pinnacle of knowledge and nobility,
His dwellings, a summer and spring residence too,

26. An ocean overflowing with knowledge and then generosity,
For people, benefit and gain accrue,

27. His hands have grasped all glory and majesty,
And how many innovations to him are due!

28. In the hands of destiny he rules with wisdom,
The plain truth revealed to his view,

29. When he closes his fingers around a quill, ask the Indian,
What did the trembling fingers ensue!

30. He brought prose like necklaces of pearls,
Wherein creativity and sublime thought accrue,

31. The chest of glory made happiest by the sun of his grace,
Its rays in every insightful eye imbue,

32. Hence, I came to the unique one hearing his fame,
In him, the highest virtues accrue,

33. To kiss the hem of his raiment, and delight my eye,
As my ear delights in hearing him, it is true,

34. For from the qualities of glory, his flowers shine the most,
By what is proclaimed and widely foretold too,

35. The full moon of most eminent dominion,
His praiseworthy qualities and nature shine through,

36. May God protect him, of generous stock,
Most fortunate, most felicitous and obeyed too,

37. My Master has set for the noblest a sublime goal,
The stars themselves envy his renown and fame too,

38. To your door came the limpid poetry of my creation,
All artifice and affectation it eschew,

39. It praises you with humility,
If it heard your system and deference too,

40. So accept it kindly, and always prosper,
With elevation and prominence ever new,
