1. The night we came together, I did not forget you
When people dispersed from Arafat

2. And the white tents at Mina did not make me forget you
When they began stoning the jamarat

3. They circumambulated the Ancient House by night
And visited the courtyard and open spaces of the House

4. As if the sand dunes were clad in friendly robes
That appeared to us in Qaz and Hajar

5. The night hides not until they hide
When they are concealed by time

6. They gathered beauty in perfect splendor
And erected power over all eyes

7. So it left me with yearning for you and regret
For you, along with all my regrets

8. They went away with the splendor of beauty and its adornment
And became content with what they left behind

9. My night in Hejaz was prolonged, while my night
Remains short, safe from morning raids

10. So excellent is the land and sea of Iraq
And the fruits it produces from its trees

11. It bears enough sorrow beneath it
For us from the mountain tops and deserts

12. O Abu Maryam, halt at Asfan for an hour
And set out in God's name and blessing

13. Pass by the Prophet's grave and bestow
Upon him many greetings and prayers

14. And for the glory that lies ahead, hasten your riding beasts
Lest you be trapped in negligence

15. When obscurities confront us and thicken
Our refuge from them is in obscurities

16. The servant of God is ignored, and knowledge disregards him
To one who knows the ignorant man's state

17. Are you not the wicked, reckless one
Who makes youth return to wickedness?

18. He has been a close and dear friend to me
A brother apart from my brothers and trusted kin

19. Whispering what bitterness lay in his soul
As hot wind passes over meadows

20. A boon companion of kings who treat me with favor
Yearning for the youths and maidens

21. When will an unmarried maiden receive me in her abode?
I will stay trusting in generosity and aid

22. In Asad and the tiger are the sons of Qasit—
Refuge from days and change lies with them

23. The courageous and patient and virtuous
Are our brethren, formidable against assaults

24. And if Qais unites against me and overcomes,
I stay trusting in wealth and riches

25. And I would sooner abandon the slave of Qais and abandon a tribe
That answers the call to arms with prayers

26. And if I abandon Omar, I will face every band
Forbidden, deprived of shoulder blades

27. How many an abode in ancient Dubaia
Is ascribed to the noble and lofty palaces

28. In Kalb lies might, distinction, and distance
From shortcoming and cattle pens

29. Slaughter stems only from Rabia, wealth,
Defending honors and sanctities

30. And they led the reins of paganism
Chiefs competing in raids

31. They led armies, the first after the first
To which Aad yielded for their great number

32. When the wintry wind blew and blew it
And slapped the souls with winters

33. You saw Maad and the Yamanis take refuge
In Bakr from assaults and attacks

34. In our palms are the keys to the gates of dew
So our request calls for desires

35. When the Bakrite perishes, his inheritance is
A lance and a sword that cuts and slashes

36. And they left no wealth from Kisra and his army
Upon the earth after the passing of nights

37. Unless fate gives us power over the enemy
Wish and be tested by our fear in whispers

38. The threat of Bakr bin Wa'il to death
Casts the soul into intoxication

39. Whoever Bakr does not belong to is lost
When fear displays the vanguards of cavalry

40. When the days pass Bakr bin Wa'il
You will see Maad beneath them in rank

41. And every slain man of Rabi'a traces
His lineage to lofty shoulders and clavicles

42. And the day of Khazar, they took Tubba's horses
And brought him ill-fortune openly

43. For them are marked lands, encompassing all Iraq,
Inherited from righteous forefathers

44. The first place they settled was Yamama, wherein they built
Palaces and rivers amid vegetation

45. A band of them overcame Bahrain
Bearing banners for them and symbols

46. And they prevented what lay between Hulwan and Darb
To the Romans' road of glorious relics

47. As for the clan of Isa, their abode extends
To what the atmosphere contained of ruins

48. Banu Hurra led ferocious black lions
To war, awed by calamities

49. By the greatest at Raihan lies their tomb
Sacred beneath the soil, a relic

50. Stop and ask it, if it answers, and test
Abu Dulaf concerning its virtues

51. A man who was seldom without sword and spear,
Other than death, did not take him from this world

52. He is the excellent, victorious banner
That turned upon the enemies a cup of death

53. He made the Persians taste his power
And they became greatest in ruin

54. Al-Nu'man was only killed while around him
Were lions seeking triumphs

55. And Qahtan's steeds never before transgressed
Against anyone in secret or openly

56. They met him, the plot of deceit in them, and they withdrew
To kill nobles who had trusted them

57. A defeated captive, after a piercing, said:
I am his captive, and captivity is one of my deeds

58. By the religion of the Commander of the Faithful, his view
We profess, denying doubt and ambiguity

59. So every clan of Maad and others
Sees Qasim as a light in the darkness

60. And if not for death, in his place would have been
Abu Dulaf, who comes upon the breeze

61. O Abu Dulaf, you launched twenty raids
And destroyed the people of earth in years

62. You left the path of death by the sword thriving—
The slain choke it without dying

63. You were patient, for patience is your nature,
Against the betrayals of betraying time

64. Until you raised the sword and spear after
You soared and grasped the stars in the sky

65. You greeted Harun the Caliph when he called
And found him in God the best supporter

66. You gave security to a frightened flock and returned them
And reconciled a people after long dispersal

67. You restored the scabbard over the staff, so you united them
When they had made the staff a cause for tears

68. And you clothed your blessings upon the poor and others
And followed constant kindness with bonds

69. So your glory is paired with knowledge and generosity
Your munificence paired with true promises

70. And no moment did the tribes miss from you
A generous giver who brings the winds of gifts

71. And none in this world are your equal when
Far extends the course of goals and ambitions

72. Whenever a blessing from you shelters us with good
You make its like sisters to it

73. You spread wealth, valor, charity and dew
With firm resolve and excellent composure

74. O Abu Dulaf, praising you has exhausted my traits
Yet I suffice people with some of my traits

75. The most wondrous mold ever circulated in sublime
And intrinsic gold and purity

76. With it a kingdom about to collapse was restored
And the finest blessings bestowed upon Isa's clan

77. Qasim built a lofty glory, his houses
And built the houses of glory with resolves

78. He resembled Isa in his munificence and valor
And love of nobility and almsgiving

79. He resembled Idris whose sword's edge
Ignites fires in the deserts

80. As if the steeds of Maqil's clan in battle
Are hell with wrath and growling

81. His father Umayr led Wail's sons
To glory, unlocking afflictions

82. Banu Dulaf deserve precedence, for they are
The essence of conviction in what is to come

83. As if the cloud of glory were stuffed in their palms
When darkness blankets the horizons

84. Whenever you visit them each year, they are welcoming
Nor forget kindness and joy

85. How often they mended my state and granted me rewards
And showed me generosity and spending

86. And for their gifts I possess, I am like Ma'n
And my equal, Talha of gifts

87. So my people's wish is that I gain eternity through them
And my enemies' wish is the end of my life

88. I am the poet who dictates to a thousand scribes
And my diction outruns the Euphrates' flow

89. I create, and relate no poem to people
