إليك أمير المؤمنين تعسفت

1. To you, O Commander of the Faithful, the deserted dwellings have become desolate,
Their vestiges effaced as if they were written on seeeping dunes.

١. إليكَ أَمِيرَ المُؤْمِنينَ تَعسَّفَتْ
بِنَا البِيدُ هَوْجَاءُ النّجاءِ خَبُوبُ

2. Had it not been for her presence before them, the mountains would not have crumbled,
With dusty slopes and ridges.

٢. وَلَوْ لَمْ يَكنْ قُدَّامَها ما تَقَاذفَتْ
جِبَالٌ بِهَا مُغْبَرَّةٌ وسُهُوبُ

3. He is a youth not needing to feign valor,
Nor to train to have a noble spirit.

٣. فَتىً هُوَ مِنْ غَيْرِ التَّخَلُّقِ مَاجِدٌ
وَمِنْ غَيْرِ تَأدِيبِ الرِّجَالِ أَدِيبُ

4. His nature transcends that of men, and his character,
When the morals of men grow narrow, is most generous.

٤. عَلاَ خَلْقُه خَلْقَ الرِّجالِ وخُلْقُهُ
إذا ضَاقَ أخْلاَقُ الرِّجالِ رَحِيبُ

5. When the warriors march forth, he strides ahead of them,
Boldly daring what they fear and avoid.

٥. إذَا شَاهَدَ القوَّادَ سَارَ أَمَامَهُمْ
جَرِيءٌ عَلَى ما يَتَّقُونَ وَثُوبُ

6. If he becomes separated from them, they are filled with awe of him
By which he subdues the foe when absent.

٦. وإنْ غَابَ عَنْهُمْ شَاهدَتْهُمْ مَهابَةٌ
بها يَقْهَرُ الأعْدَاءَ حِينَ يَغِيبُ

7. He is chaste and modest when alone,
As he is chaste and modest when watched.

٧. يَعِفُّ وَيسْتَحْيِي إذا كان خَالِياً
كما عَفَّ واسْتَحْيَا بِحَيْثُ رَقِيبُ
