1. Like an insistent beggar
He knocked loudly on the door

2. In anger I hit him with my stick
And it fell from his hand like dry wood

3. This mind in the prime of youth
Cares not for right or wrong

4. And the father saw the deed and was upset
While the others smiled like a garden of flowers

5. A sigh in his mouth caught fire
His heart fluttered in his chest

6. A star flashed in his eyes
The light of the moon briefly shone

7. My heedless soul trembled in the body
Patience left and courage abandoned me

8. Like a chick in autumn it shook
Spending the night in the nest tossed by the winds

9. My father said to me on the Day of Assembly
You will meet the best of mankind

10. The brave strangers among his nation
And the heirs of his wisdom

11. The shining stars, the pure ones
The proof of faith, the martyrs

12. The scholars, the spiritual ones
The ascetics, the sinners

13. Amid the throng of the Assembly
The cry of this broken beggar rose

14. O you bewildered in this procession
What will be my answer when the Prophet questions me?

15. God has blessed you as a Muslim child
Yet you gained nothing from my book

16. How small these matters seemed to burden you
This clay did not become fully human to you

17. While I face rebuke from the best of messengers
Between fear, hope and shame

18. Think carefully my son
As the chosen nation turns to me

19. See my white beard on the Day
Remember my tremor in fear and grief

20. Do not add to your father's weakness
Do not embarrass me before my Lord tomorrow

21. You recited the branches of the Chosen One
Yet did not bloom in the spring of the Chosen One

22. Take a glance at his garden
And emulate his manners and temperament

23. The guide of Rome whose droplets
Contained an ocean, his words gave life

24. Do not reject the rope from the best of mankind
Do not say before me you have skills and insight

25. The nature of a Muslim is compassion
His words and deeds are all mercy

26. The one who split the moon
His mercy encompassed and gave light to mankind

27. If you are far from our group then withdraw
You are not of us, so keep your distance

28. You are a bird flying above our tree
Your melody and rhythm are not of our song

29. If your tune is not unique
Do not sing except in our orchard

30. All who gain a share of life
Outside their own environment meet their demise

31. You are a nightingale, so frolic in the garden
Burst into song with the flock's melody

32. If you are an eagle then do not deceive the seas
The desert wilderness alone is your abode

33. Or if you are a star, shine in your sky
Let your destination be none but your orbit

34. You are an April rain drop, gather
And make the garden your home of dew

35. That you may see yourself like drops of dew
The sleeves embrace them like a child

36. The breaths of air dried up its essence
And stole the splendor from its being

37. In the rays of dawn, the break of morning
Which grows the flowers with its magic

38. You will see your goal as no more than bubbles
Your striving just a mirage

39. Cast it into the sea to form a jewel
Its waters will shine like a brilliant star

40. An April drop, keep away from the sea
Or dried up, it will not become a pearl

41. The clay of a Muslim, my son
Is a jewel whose water comes from the Prophet's ocean

42. An April drop, so dissolve into its waves
And emerge as a pure jewel from its depths

43. The sun at dawn called out, "Be luminous!
Be radiant! Do not conceal the ages!"
