1. The land of Khujand brought forth a builder
Who gained widespread fame in construction

2. Truly, Farhad was born a builder
To erect a mosque for Murad

3. The sultan grew angry at his negligence
He saw no excellence in its construction

4. The king's eyes sparked embers
And the poor man's hand was promptly severed

5. He went to the judge, moaning and writhing
His blood pouring from his hand

6. He said, "O you whose word is the clear truth
O guardian of the law of the best of messengers

7. I am no slave to the sultan, so listen
To the judgment of the Quran concerning us and decide"

8. The judge knocked on the council hall
And summoned the sultan to the gathering

9. So the sultan came, fearing his sin
The awe of the Quran softening his heart

10. His eyes were downcast from shame
And regret colored his cheeks

11. The two opponents stood, one complaining
The other in the garb of the king

12. The sultan declared, "I regret this
I do not deny right, I have transgressed"

13. And the judge recited, "Equity is in retribution"
That is the law of life, there is no alternative

14. A free man is not like a slave, Muslim
The architect and king's blood is equal

15. He heard the Quran dictate its ruling
So the sultan immediately rolled up his sleeve

16. When the opponent saw what had happened
He recited the verse of kindness and justice

17. Saying, "God, I pardon and that is enough
I pardon for the sake of the Chosen One"

18. An ant overpowered mighty Solomon
