1. A Brahmin in the flames of knowledge
Immersed in the thought of existence and nonexistence

2. With the righteous whose deeds are protected
And who are fully endowed with wisdom

3. His mind ascended above the celestial sphere
His thoughts solve every problem of the past

4. His brilliant mind either takes flight
Or from it the skies are set ablaze

5. For ages his cup contained no wine
Protected by the wind, the cupbearer of wisdom

6. In the gardens of knowledge he spread his nets
The bird of meaning - with it he could not keep pace

7. His thoughts were human but the planets
Remained to him an unsolved mystery

8. His sighs expressed his despair
And his glances spoke of his confusion

9. One day he walked towards a perfect Sheikh
A breast containing a suffering heart

10. He met the Sheikh with a hopeful soul
Who listened in silence, attentively

11. The Sheikh exhorted: take to the heavens
Descend to earth and pasture the flocks

12. You felt cramped doing good deeds on earth
So your ambitious mind rose to the heights

13. You rounded up the planets on earth - stop!
Do not fly in search of the planets' secret

14. I do not say forsake your idols tomorrow
You are an unbeliever - so take your waistband

15. O trustee of the legacy of ancient times
Do not abandon the path of your ancestors

16. Through unity the nation comes alive
And so it is with unbelief - it has unity

17. You have not yet perfected your unbelief
You are not worthy of such an understanding heart

18. Abraham left us long ago
While you moved away from Azar

19. We measure what Qais craved in madness
Of love, for what is incomplete

20. The candle of the self in us is extinguished
How can circumambulating the heavens avail us?

21. The waves of the sea foamed up in fury
Down the slopes of impenetrable mountains saying:

22. Bearing in its dignity its coolness
Tying round its waist its glittering belt

23. God created you as a savior for the heavens
And protected your feet as you walked the barren land

24. He restricted your feet from walking
O venerable one, whose head reached the sky!

25. Life is but a journey and prayer
And the wave's life is but to roll on

26. The mountain was angry at the river's talk
And its breaths blew with sparks

27. It said: O my mirror image - woe to you!
How my breast contained vapors like you!

28. This journey now is yours
Whoever leaves himself one day is lost

29. With a place to stay - why not settle?
Boasting of evil, O ignorant one!

30. O child of the celestial sphere nourished!
You became less than the lowly coast

31. You usurped the self wrongfully
You made the soul a thieving vagrant

32. Be like a sapling focused on its Lord
Do not cast your palms to the blowing wind

33. Life is but growth in a place
And plucking flowers in the self's meadows

34. In times when my feet did not waver
Do you see me leaving my abode?

35. And though my steps ascend the sky
On my slopes the celestial sphere rests

36. You perish in the midst of green pastures
While my summits are a temple for the stars

37. With my eyes the secret of the celestial sphere shone
And with my hearing the flight of angels

38. And with the fire of my zeal through time
My breast contained every kind of gem

39. My heart is of rock and my fire is in the rock
No passage for water to my fire

40. If you are but a drop, guard yourself
Resist the waves and abandon despair

41. Seek the light and be a shining pearl
Then be an earring on a glowing cheek

42. Rise up as a rain-bearing cloud
That lights up lightning and rouses seas

43. The sea stretches its hand to your stream
Complaining of poverty, seeking moisture
