1. Alas, the fires of sorrow kindle,
And why do longing passions not subside?

2. And why do tears of the eye flow as though
They were showers pouring from clouds amassed,

3. While the cooing of doves brings joy as though
To them you are a confidant, or greater yet.

4. For memories of you in the stations of travel
A young beauty inspires minds and makes them sick.

5. A girl rivaling the full moon on a complete night
Which the passionate, loving night visitor craves.

6. For her in beauty there is none before her,
And pleasing conversation for an intimate and boon companion.

7. A houri, if she would glance towards an ascetic,
He would chant in his prayer niche at dawn.

8. She is like a willow branch when it sways,
Or a gazelle with a slender and supple body.

9. When she comes the sun is dimmed by her face’s light,
And when she turns away the branch is like the darkest night.

10. As though the flash of lightning in the gloom of night
Were the radiance of her smiling mouth when it kisses.

11. As though the scent of musk were the fragrance of her mouth
When she speaks, or enduring good quality ambergris.

12. She speaks to the hearts of the passionately enamored with a melody
Beyond what strings produce when we speak.

13. By my life, she surpasses and possesses beauties
As the noble, brave, and generous bestows them.

14. The imam of guidance, sea of gentleness, source of loyalty,
Spacious hospitality, sun of the magnificent countries,

15. Ally of the high, towering in lineage, delight of mankind,
Full moon of religion, and rightly guided.

16. He is glory, Abdallah, in whose shade renown
Sinks for my life among the lands and becomes obscure.

17. He assumed command, outstripping every eminent one,
And was for my life the shrewdest in obscure matters.

18. And when we came to Kharruj and the open desert confronted him,
He afflicted them with tribulation determined and resolved.

19. He besieged them therein nights, ceaselessly
Kindling the fires of war and stoking them.

20. Therein the towering ladies had their shelters destroyed,
All that was abominable and painful to them.

21. Until Yam crumbled amidst themselves
And the cavalry among them took the initiative and presented themselves.

22. We came to the land of Sufayl then he did not cease to conduct matters
And bring them together until ninety days had passed,

23. All the while scheming means through which evil may be terminated.
That was not from suspecting his resolve wavering,

24. But he is resolute determination and an unwavering opinion.
So when the fears of Yam came with their pride

25. And our grievances against them were restrained and curbed,
He saw what he saw in his lofty opinion which is more prudent,

26. Which required a truce and he granted it.
He gave them what they dictated out of compassion

27. And gentleness towards these people, all of them.
He sees that there is good in reconciliation, and the path of purity

28. Is the most guided path and most upright.
So to God my Lord belongs praise and thanks

29. For what He decreed in what transpired, and He is most Wise in His creation.
O people of Yemen embarking on a journey convey

30. The greetings of one suffering anguish of heart and convey
A greeting emulating the pure musk’s perspiration

31. And sweeter than delicious honey and more nourishing.
Set out to the land of civilization overburdened,

32. Having endured perils with intent towards them.
A brother and friend both of them,

33. While we are greater in compassion and fondness.
Convey to them what God concluded, the decree of what transpired,

34. And God knows best that which is in people.
And entreat them by God - what was concluded by estrangement

35. And where do I see the rope of affection severed?
My loved ones, until when and to when

36. Shall I conceal what has come upon me or speak of it?
If it was estrangement due to a sin I committed

37. I will go back into myself with that and regret.
For you two are the people of affection and purity

38. While the fires of sorrow for your estrangement kindle.
If it was not a sin I committed, but rather

39. You two forgot a pact of affection that was bound,
Then by God rise up and look and contemplate

40. For if you two knew what has proceeded...
But I, praise be to God, have not ceased

41. To keep to the pact which is more prudent.
My God, bless what the morning breeze conveyed secretly

42. And what star emerged from the horizon,
Upon the Chosen One, his family, and all his companions,

43. And those who followed them so long as a pilgrim circles the House.
