1. Take for yourself a chisel and hammer,
And make whenever you wish a knife and nail.

2. Or take for yourself a saw and plane,
And be like Noah the prophet of God, a carpenter.

ููููู ููููุญู ููุจููู ุงูููููู ููุฌููุงุฑูุง
3. Or be a craftsman who casts rods that emerge
From his workshop in rows for the women, dinars.
ูฃ. ุฃูุตูุงุฆูุบุงู ููุณุจููู ุงูุนููููุงูู ุชูุจูุฑูุฒู ู
ููู
ุฅุจูุฑูุฒููู ูููููุณูุง ุตูููุงู ูุฏูููุงุฑูุง
4. Or take for yourself a flute and drum,
And live well as a drummer and piper.

ูุฒูู
ูุงุฑุงู ูุฏูุจูุฏูููุฉู
ูุนูุดู ูููู ุงูุฎููุฑู ุทูุจููุงูุงู ูุฒูู

5. Or be, my soul, a trumpeter, then no harm upon you
If you become a trumpeter in the morning.
ูฅ. ุฃูููููู ููุฏููุชููู ุตููููุงุฑุงู ููููุณู ุนูููู
ุนูููููุงูู ุจูุฃูุณู ุฅุฐูุง ุฃุตูุจุญุชู ุตููููุงุฑูุง
6. Or be like your lowly companion Abu Hasan,
I mean Ali, the youth of Imran the saddle-maker.
ูฆ. ุฃูููููู ููุตูุงุญูุจููู ุงูุฃุฏูููู ุฃุจู ุญูุณููู
ุฃุนููู ุนููููุงู ููุชูู ุนูู
ุฑุงูู ุฒูุฑููุงุฑูุง
7. Or follow the son of the craftsman in his drapery,
Or walk behind the youth of Shansuh the butcher.
ูง. ุฃู ููุงุชููุจูุนู ุงุจูู ู
ูููููุง ูู ุจูุฒูุงุฒูุชููู
ุฃู ููุงู
ูุดู ุฎูููู ููุชูู ุดูููุตููู ููุตููุงุฑูุง
8. Or ask the son of the craftsman about his craft,
Which will benefit you with the quintar, dinars.

ู ุตูููุนูุชููู

ููุง ููููุฏููู ุจุงูุฏููููุงุฑู ููููุทูุงุฑูุง
9. Or treat maladies in their medicines and be
Sharwa Khamis ibn Khadhdhamooh the veterinarian.
ูฉ. ุฃูุนูุงููุฌู ุงูุฃูุชููู ูู ุฃุฏููุงูุฆูููููู ููููู
ุดูุฑูููู ุฎูู
ูุณู ุจู ุฎูุถููุงู
ููู ุจููุทุงุฑูุง
10. Or dig out clay from Rashalah and make
Jars from it and live as a jar-maker.

ููู ุฑูุดูุงููู ุงูุทููููู ู
ูุชููุฎุฐุงู
ู
ููู ุงูุฌูุฑูุงุฑู ูุนูุดู ูู ุงูุฎูุท ุฌูุฑููุงุฑูุง
11. Or pack the jenny-asses and load wood above them
For itโs best if you become a donkey-driver in the morning.

ููุฎูููุฑู ุดููุกู ุฅุฐูุง ุฃูุตูุจุญุชู ุญูู

12. Or take up the trap and go wherever you wish and hunt
With it birds for the lads of the neighborhood.

ููู ุงูููุฎูู ูุงุฐูููุจู ุญููุซู ุดูุฆูุชู ููุตูุฏู
ุจููู ููุตูุจููุฉู ุฃูููู ุงูุฎูุท ุฃูุทูููุงุฑูุง
13. And if you hear my saying then go trusting
In your God sailing the seas a sailor.

ูููุงููู ูุงู
ูุถู ู
ูุชูููููุงู
ุนูููู ุฅูููููู ูู ุงูุฃุจูููุงู
ุจูุญููุงุฑูุง
14. And if you spurn this then greet with
Asking your Lordโs forgiveness, youโll meet God forgiving.

ุงุณุชูุบูููุงุฑู ุฑูุจูููู ุชููููู ุงูููููู ุบููููุงุฑูุง
15. Or as a muezzin in Godโs houses making us hear
Your sweet call to prayer, dawns and nightfalls.

ูุงู ูู ุจููููุชู ุงูููููู ุชูุณูู
ูุนูููุง
ุฃูุฐูุงูููู ุงูุนูุฐูุจู ุขุตูุงูุงู ูุฃุณูุญูุงุฑูุง
16. Or as a lyricist praising the best of mankind Haydarah
Or a reciter in the streetsโ corners stories.

ูุฏูุญู ุฎูููุฑู ุงููููุงุณู ุญูููุฏูุฑูุฉู
ุฃููููุงุฑุฆุงู ูู ููููุงุญูู ุงูุณููููู ุฃุฎูุจูุงุฑูุง
17. And donโt blame a quarter of poetry, for it
Has mange, you lagged behind its course when it raced.

ุธูุนููุงู ุชุฃุฎููุฑุชู ุนู ู

18. My exquisite poetry, a long-necked bird
Has circled round, so refrain from it when it flew.

19. And here it is, hot like firebrands, blazing
Through your heart, do not set it aflame.
