1. O passing clouds, do not go beyond
Watering the meadows of al-Qumay`iyya

2. Watering that fulfills the rights of our past life
And loans us the rights of the future

3. I have not forgotten days in which I reaped fruits early
The fruits of delight in them or nights

4. A meadow spread out as the edges of lilies are furnished
On which the stars of flowers awake

5. It stops the sights between anemone
Red, ruby-leaved

6. And mustard yellow which the noonday sun polished
Golden, gilt-paged

7. Nothing is more beautiful to look at than its morning
With the sun in it, burnished mirror

8. And when it clouds over, you see it darkly overcast
With the embroidery of lightning, patterned clouds

9. Passing over hot hearts with their coolness
Its breezes musky-scented breaths

10. Its nightingales grew used to whistling so one responded to another
In the babbling talk of neighbors

11. And the doves cooed in it as the Jews recited
The readings of the Torah

12. The ears do not lack in its minaret
The tunes of the rebec and the hubbub of the flutes

13. And the water, its streams send it as
It flowed among the horses in the hippodrome

14. And the palm trees are like gilded brides
Azure-hued, turquoise-wreathed

15. And the bunches of its grapes when they ripened
Became wrapped in grape leaf coverings

16. Appearing then hiding as you hid in
The green of veils the faces of maidens

17. With sparkling glances that hasten to
Kill souls slow of movement

18. Swaying of figure, dune-like of hips
Gazelle-eyed of glance

19. I kissed her and the heat of my fervor fell
Sweeter than honey with Euphrates water

20. She said, and I denied what her glances did to me
While I am the disobedient, recklessly wanton one

21. Jesting, she toys with me and my craving
Is for jesting from the likes of these words

22. How many frozen hearts has the wink of the doe-eyed one's
Glances laid down for a time

23. Moments of delights passed, and life watered
What is gone of those moments

24. Nothing is more painful to the throat or more biting than
A life whose pleasures have passed

25. Its cheerfulness went and its ardour remained in my
Throat amidst my complaints and cravings

26. Will the coming nights restore it?
Far from it! Far from it!
