1. My Lord, if a man knocked at another's door
With hand outstretched in hope, and went away deprived,

2. You would have mercy on him and blame the other for his stinginess—
Stinginess, You would say, is a mark of humankind.

3. Yet You are the Generous One whose renown
For kindness and beneficence has spread.

4. I have stood begging at Your door of bounty
For a long time, in need.

5. I pray to You earnestly and plead as a suppliant
In secret and openly.

6. Why then should I go back disappointed after
My hand has grown tired from knocking and my tongue weary?
