1. Leave me be and my affairs, for modesty is my way
I melt away if slain for another's passion in any way

2. My Lord has honored me with contentment, for my lifelong habit
Has been to keep my modesty safe throughout my life's span

3. And harder than losing both hands for a young man
Is a vile request that scorns you when fortune comes your way

4. And harder than that, in humiliation and bitterness
Is accepting a kind deed from the hand of a lowly man
