1. Tell those who spurned me, when you are mentioned
My talk was like pure musk whose trail lingers on,
١. قُل لِلَّذينَ جُفوني إِذا لَهَجَت بِهِم
ذِكراً كانَ فِتيَتَ المِسكِ يَعقِبُهُ
2. All know I almost worshipped them, preferred them
Above all people. Honesty guides the truest tongue.
٢. وَالكُلُّ يَعلَمُ أَنّي كِدتُ أَعبَدُهُم
دونَ الأَنامِ وَخَيرُ القَولِ أَصدَقُهُ
3. I loved you and was near destroyed for loving you,
No trickery in trying, though striving wears one down.
٣. أَحَبَّكُم وَهَلاكي في مَحَبَّتِكُم
وَما اِحتِيالي وَجُهدِ المَرءِ يُرهِقُهُ
4. My passion is example enough in love, and sorrowing
Like the fire-worshipper longing for the fire though it burns him.
٤. لي أُسوَةٌ في غَرامي وَالشَقاءُ بِكُم
كَعابِدِ النارِ يَهواها وَتَحرِقُهُ
