تعودت مس الضر حتى ألفته

1. I grew accustomed to being touched by harm, until I became familiar with it
So I found it bitter in taste, beyond patience

١. تَعَوَّدتُ مَسَّ الضُرِّ حَتّى أَلِفتُهُ
فَأَلفَيتَهُ مُرَّ المَذاقِ عَنِ الصَبرِ

2. And I chose to surrender to what destiny had determined
And good wisdom made me surrender to patience

٢. وَخَيَّرتُ تَسليمي لَمّا أَبرَمَ القَضا
وَأَسلَمَني حُسنَ الغَزاءِ إِلى الصَبرِ

3. And my despair of all people altogether
Made me, through my Master’s predetermined decree of the matter

٣. وَصَيَّرَني يَأسى مِنَ الناسِ كُلُّهُم
بِتَدبيرِ مَولايَ المُقَدَّرِ لِلأَمرِ

4. Until my time became clear and my resting places became sweet
Through God's good work, from where I did not know

٤. إِلى أَن صَفا وَقتي وَراقَت مَناهِلي
بِحُسنِ صَنيعِ اللَهِ مِن حَيثُ لا أَدري
