1. Is there no way to attain my desire,
So this anguish in my heart would disappear?
١. ألا هَل إلَى مَا أبتَغِيهِ سَبِيلُ
فَيَذْهَبُ كَرْبٌ بِالفُؤادِ دَخِيلُ
2. My night has been so long waiting for it,
The nights of the afflicted are surely long.
٢. فَقَدْ طَالَ لَيلِي في انتِظَارِ حُصُولِهِ
أمَا أنَّ لَيلَ المُبتَلِينَ طَوِيلُ
3. Managing the whims of a feeble-minded one,
Inclined to women's temperament, has wearied me.
٣. وَأتعَبَنِي تَدْبِيرُ كُلِّ مُهَوَّسٍ
بَلِيدٍ إلَى طَبعِ النِّساءِ يَمِيلُ
4. For people are but cattle,
And those of reason among them are few.
٤. فَمَا النَّاسُ في التَّحقِيقِ إلاَّ سَوَائِمُ
وَذُو العَقْلِ مِنْهُمْ في الحِسابِ قَلِيلُ
5. Most who alert you to something are lying,
And most of the truthful's speech is excess.
٥. وَأكْثَرُ مَنْ يُنْبِيكَ بِالأمرِ كَاذِبُ
وَجُلُّ حَدِيثِ الصَّادِقِينَ فُضُولُ
6. She whose house I visited early said,
"May this protect you while foes roam about."
٦. تَقُولُ التِي بَكَّرْتُ من كِسرِ بَيتِهَا
أعَامَكَ هَذا وَالعُدَاةُ تَجُولُ
7. I told her, perhaps hardships have piled up,
Till they lead to achieving what is desired.
٧. فَقُلْتُ لَهَا خَيراً لَعَلَّ مَضائِقاً
تَوَالَتْ ألَى نَيْلِ المُرادِ تَؤولُ
8. So through how many tribulations is one dragged unwillingly,
While they lead to what one seeks?
٨. فَكَمْ مِحْنَة يُبلَى بهَا المرءُ كارِهاً
وَفِيهَا إلَى مَا يَبتَغِيهِ سَبِيلُ
9. May God erase the gangs of Algeria,
Not one of them would a noble accept.
٩. مَحَا اللهُ أوبَاشَ الجَزَائِرِ عُصْبَةً
فَمَا مِنْهُمُ مَنْ يَرتَضِيهِ أصِيلُ
10. Bankrupt are their youth and senile their elders,
Foolish, while their sheikhs are despicable.
١٠. مَفَالِيسُ أمَّا كَهْلُهُمْ فَمُحَمَّقٌ
سَفِيهٌ وَأمَّا شَيخُهُمْ فَرَذِيلُ
11. If called one day to do something immoral,
Cowardly deserters and rebels rush forth.
١١. إذا مَا دُعُوا يَومْاً إلى فِعلِ مُنكَرٍ
تَلاَحَقَ مِنهُمْ بَازِلٌ وَفَصِيلُ
12. They wanted us, while sword and spear are ours,
And a fire burning mountains away they wish undone.
١٢. أرَادُوا بِنَا وَالسَّيفُ وَالرَّمحُ دُونَنَا
وَنَارٌ لَهَا شُمَّ الجِبالِ تَزولُ
13. Vain hopes deceived them that they would prevail,
When troops came from the land's farthest reach.
١٣. وَغَرَّتهُمُ الآمَالُ أنْ سَوفَ يَظْفَرُوا
إذا بَانَ مِنْ أقصَى البِلادِ طُلُولُ
14. They compared us to weak past folk,
While those are years gone by, their seasons passed.
١٤. وَقَاسُوا عَلَى نَاسٍ ضِعَافٍ تَقَدَّمُوا
وَهَاتِيكَ أعوَامٌ مَضَتْ وَفُصُولُ
15. Did not the change in our country's ways
Argue against their faulty reasoning?
١٥. أمَا كَانَ في تَغِييِرِ أسْلُوبِ قُطرِنَا
عَلى القَدْحِ في ذاكَ القِياسِ دَلِيلُ
16. When the citadel was surrounded by a wall,
With cannons at each corner snarling,
١٦. مَتَى دَارَ حَولَ الكَافِ سورٌ عَلاَ بهِ
عَلَى كُلّ رُكنٍ بِالمَدَافِعِ غُولُ
17. It shone like the moon, a halo around it,
But it terrifies corruptors, they cower.
١٧. يَحُفُّ بهِ كَالبَدْرِ حَفَّتُهُ هَالَةٌ
وَلَكِنَّهُ لِلمُفسِدينَ يَهُولُ
18. When a battalion returns to ravage them,
Lightning tells them: "Begone, you insolent ones!"
١٨. إذا رَجَعَتْ لِلفَتْكِ فِيهِ كَتِيبَةٌ
تَقُولُ لهُمْ تِلكَ الصَّواعِقُ زُولُوا
19. They came to it hastily rushing, driven
To doom, by order of those who lie.
١٩. أتَوهُ خِفَافاً مُسرِعِينَ يَسوُقُهُمْ
إلَى الحَتفِ قَالُ المُفتَرِينَ وَقِيلُ
20. So their first army met disgrace,
A burden on those who went ahead.
٢٠. فَصَادَفَ بِالهَوانَ أوَّلَ جَيشِهِمْ
هَوَانٌ عَلَى مَنْ قَدَّمُوهُ ثَقِيلُ
21. Thus their leader's head was our first victory,
In the beginning is knowledge of the ending.
٢١. فَكَانَ لَنَا بَاكُورَةَ الفَتحِ رَأسُهُ
وَفي البَدءِ مِنْ عِلمِ الخِتامِ حصولُ
22. Though they claimed there'd be no trouble,
No tribe of the land would defy them,
٢٢. وَقَدْ حَدَّثُوا مِنْ قَبلُ أنْ لاَ مَشَقَّةَ
وَلاَ يَعصِهِمْ مِنْ ذِي البِلاَدِ قَبِيلُ
23. They did not lie that the speaker of lies is lying,
And the chief of liars is despicable.
٢٣. فَمَا كَذَبُوا أنَّ المْحَدّثَ كَاذِبٌ
وَأنَّ زَعِيمَ الكَاذِبِينَ ذَلِيلُ
24. The chief of the citadel is the first supporter,
And he will meet them with meager shade.
٢٤. وَأنَّ رَئِيسُ الكَافِ أوَّلُ مُسعِفٍ
وَيَلقَاهُمُ ظِلٌّ هُنَاكَ ظَلِيلُ
25. When an army fears war once,
Repeated fear does not make them recoil.
٢٥. فَصَبَّحَهُمْ فِي النَّازِعَاتِ مُدَبِّرٌ
وَكُورٌ بِأمرِ المُرسَلاَتِ عَجُولُ
26. His reputation reached the Maghrebis with the breeze,
And news of him blew to the Easterners.
٢٦. فَمَالُوا لِغِيرانِ الثَّرى يَحفِرونَهَا
وَلاحَتْ عَلَيهِمْ ذلَّةٌ وَخُمولُ
27. He is a treasure for us ever flourishing,
And lofty glory none can attain.
٢٧. كَأنَّهُمُ فِيرَانُ قَاعٍ تَنَاهَشَتْ
وَبَاقِيهِمُ حَولَ الحُصُونِ وُعُولُ
28. Would fortified Tunis fear attacks,
After what he made its bulwark? That would be absurd!
٢٨. وَقَالُوا لَنَا في اللُّغمِ أيُّ كِفَايَةٍ
سَيَقْلَعُ مَبنى سُورِهِمْ وَيَزِيلُ
29. Who will tell the Algerians that they
Are wretched, while we are fortunate, as time shows?
٢٩. فَمَا رَاعَهُمْ إلاَّ مُجَمجِمُ رأسِهِ
تُدَحرِجُهُ أيْدِي الصَّبا وَشَمُولُ
30. O castrated people of Algiers and Oran, awake!
You are rebels, while we are valiant Muslims.
٣٠. نَتِيجَةُ تَدْبِيرِ الأمِيرِ الذي لَهُ
مَزَايِا وبَاعٌ فِي العُلُومِ طَويلُ
31. Tabarka and Oran's events bear witness for us against you,
Upright witnesses.
٣١. أبوُ الحَسَنْ البَاشَا الذي عَزَّ أنْ يُرَى
لَهُ فِي اكْتِسَابِ المَكْرُماتِ كَفِيلُ
32. You will suffer great distress, if you do not desist,
And departure then will be difficult.
٣٢. إذا خَافَ سُلْطَانٌ من الحَربِ مَرَّةً
أبَى أنْ يُعِيدَ الخَوفَ فِيهِ عَذُولُ
33. Sudden armies will raid you amid darkness,
With warriors between Al-Qarna and Al-Hajar.
٣٣. مَضَى صِيتُهُ لِلمَغْرِبَينِ معَ الصِّبا
وَهَبَّتْ بِهِ لِلمَشرِقَينِ شَمُولُ
34. They will meet you with each resolute one
Whose hands long to spill dissidents' blood.
٣٤. لَنَا مِنْهُ كَنزٌ لاَ يُكَدَّرُ زاخِرٌ
وَشَامِخُ عِزّ لاَ يُنَالُ طَويلُ
35. A seasoned warrior will strike your foreheads and drive you back,
Skilled in all sorts of combat and esteemed.
٣٥. أتَخْشَى مِنَ الأكدَارِ تونسُ بَعدمَا
كَسَاهَا حُصُوناً إنَّ ذا لَجَلِيلُ
36. Abu Al-Hazm, killer of sultans, Yunus,
And Yunus is a lion, devourer of lions.
٣٦. فَمَنْ مُبْلِغٌ أهلَ الجَزَائِرِ أنَّهُمْ
شَقَوا وَسَعِدنَا وَالزَّمِانُ يُدِيلُ
37. He is the warrior you know,
When noble heroes speak, their words bear fruit.
٣٧. أخِصَيانَ وَهْرَان أفِيقُوا فَإنّكُمْ
بُغَاةٌ وَأنَّا مُسلِمُونَ فُحُولُ
38. Clement to those who wrong him, unless
An ignoramus acts in ignorance, then he too is ignorant.
٣٨. لَنَا وَعَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ حَدِيثِ طبرقة
وَأخْبَارِ وهْران شهودٌ عُدُولُ
39. He will gather you in one grip and hack you down,
As the harvester hacks the crop plantings.
٣٩. سَتَبلونَ إنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهُوا بِمَشَقَّةً
يَشُقُّ مُقَامٌ عِندَهَا وَرَحِيلُ
40. And he will strike you down violently with each
Tested sword that has endured much war.
٤٠. وَتَفْجَؤكُمْ تحت القَتَامِ جَحافِلُ
لَهَا غُرَرٌ بَينَ القَنَا وحجُولُ
41. As if victory's army has come to you,
With divine favor and kindness.
٤١. تُلاَقِيكُمُ شُعْشاً بِكُلّ مُصَمَّمٍ
بِهِ لِدِمَاءِ المَارِقِينَ غَلِيلُ
42. There the vast heavens will not diminish you,
Nor will you have rest below the sky.
٤٢. فَيَضْرِبُ مِنْ هَامَاتِكُمْ وَيَصُدُّكُمْ
خَبِيرٌ بِأنْوَاعِ الحُرُوبِ جَلِيلُ
43. If he does not hasten to come to you,
It is not because the matter frightens him.
٤٣. أبُو الحَزْمِ قَتَّالُ السَّلاَطِينِ يونِسُ
وَيُونِسُ لَيْثٌ لِلأسُودِ أكُولُ
44. Since you are no match for a lord
With a sword of mighty destiny that slashes prey.
٤٤. هُوَ البَطَلُ الغَازِي الذِي قَدْ عَلِمتُمُ
قَؤُولٌ لَمَا قَالَ الكِرَامُ فَعُولُ
45. One detachment at the land's edge will suffice,
While the citadel alone foils multitudes.
٤٥. حَلِيمٌ عَلَى قُصَّادِهِ غَيْرَ أنَهُ
إذا جَهِلَ الجُهَّالُ فَهوَ جَهُولُ
46. Saving hands and preventing hands within suffice,
And hands that drive back aggressors.
٤٦. سَيَجْمَعُكُمْ فِي قَبْضَةٍ وَيَجُزُّكُمْ
كَمَا جُزَّ مِنْ أصْلِ النَّبَاتِ فَصِيلُ
47. None reward but He who erected its structure,
With the best reward in Heaven they obtain.
٤٧. وَيَضْرِبْكُمُ هَبراً بِكُلّ مُهَنَّدٍ
بِهِ مِنْ مُعَانَاةِ القِرَاعِ فُلُولُ
٤٨. كَأنْ قَدْ أتَاكُمْ يَقدُمُ النَّصرُ جَيشَهُ
وَلُطْفٌ وَظَنٌ فِي الإله جَمِيلُ
٤٩. هُنَالِكَ لاَ رَحْبُ القَضَاءِ يُقِلّكُمُ
وَلاَ لَكُمُ تَحْتَ السَّمَاءِ مَقِيلُ
٥٠. وَإنْ لَمْ يُسَارِعْ فِي القُدُومِ إلَيكُمُ
فَلَيسَ لأنَّ الخَطْبَ فِيهِ مَهُولُ
٥١. عَلَى أنَّكُمْ لَسْتُمْ بِكُفءٍ لِسَيِّدٍ
بِسَيْفٍ منَ السَّعْدِ القَوِيِّ يَصُولُ
٥٢. عَلَى أنَّهُ يَكْفِيهِ فِيكُمْ مُقَدَّمٌ
وَجَمْعٌ بِأطرَافِ البِلاَدِ قَلِيلُ
٥٣. وَفِي الكَافِ منْ مَعْنى الكِفَايَةِ كَاليءٌ
وَمِنْ كَفّ أيدِي العَادِياتِ كَفِيلُ
٥٤. وَجَازِي إلاَ هِي مَنْ أشادَ بِنَاءَهُ
بِخَيرِ جَزَاءٍ في الجِنَانِ تُنِيلُ
