1. He renewed this gate, the gate of the new,
Ali Pasha, son of the fortunate Hussein.
١. جَدَّدَ هَذا البَابَ بَابَ الجَدِيِدْ
عَلِيُّ بَاشَا ابنُ الحُسَينِ السَّعيدْ
2. He established it after it had fallen
In a sedition that would make the weaned child turn gray.
٢. أقامَهُ مِن بَعدِ مَا قَد هَوَى
في فِتنَةٍ يَشِيبُ مِنهَا الوَلِيد
3. May God protect him and his progeny
From the like of it in the goodness of an auspicious age,
٣. فَاللهُ يَحمِيهِ وأنْجَالَهُ
مِنْ مِثلِها في طِيبِ دهرٍ حميد
4. And build for them as he built
And when it was complete I dated it:
٤. ويَبْتَنِي لَهُمْ كَمَا بَنَى
هَذا هُنَا في الخُلدِ قَصرَ مشيد
5. “An entrance of kindness and a Nile ever rising.”
٥. وعِندَما قَد تَمَّ أرَّختُهُ
مَدخَلُ إرفَاقٍ ونَيل يَزيد
