1. Tell my friends who saw me dead,
And wept for me in sorrow,

2. Think not that I am dead,
Nay, by God, I live tomorrow!

3. I'm a bird, this was my cage,
I have flown and left it vacant,

4. Now I converse face to face
With God, and see Him plain.

5. Cast off the flesh and free the soul
To see the Truth unveiled,

6. Let not death's dream appall your mind -
It is no more than one world hailed.

7. The spirit's elements in us unite,
As all flesh is like one man;

8. In you I live, in you I fight,
You are myself, and I am you.

9. When good - for us, when ill - by us,
Have mercy! On yourselves have pity!

10. Consider that we follow thus,
And this life runs to God's own city.

11. See me and strengthen for the strife
This world that is no more than fled -

12. To sum my words: Praise God for life,
And peace be with the holy dead!
