1. O neighbor of Al-Bani, I wish Al-Bani had not been
And we did not know the valley of travel that separated us

2. Or I wish whenever longing circulated between us
And we were afflicted by the various kinds of passion

3. And the soul returned to the memories of your companionship
It could provide solace and consolation

4. O neighbor of Al-Bani, alas youth has
Its pleasures have deserted us and turned into sorrows

5. And the nights have changed its rebellion
Into submission and obedience to traditions

6. And the frustration of hopes has made it old
And disfigured its journey, text and title

7. So it has become like a grave in the wilderness of its loss
Struggling with the night and spirits all night

8. With an empty heart except for the rustling of passion
That almost burns the innards out of yearning

9. And remnants of feeling and emotion
That poetry's tears sometimes express

10. So look how it has denied melodies
And how the meadows of life no longer delight it

11. And how I no longer care whether I came down in Amman
Or left for the waters of Oman

12. And I do not mind riding its expanse yesterday
Or riding away from its land openly

13. It has become a yesterday and despair, so come close my hut
Where I swim in wine or repent in bars

14. And tell Oboud that if I am inclined to sins

15. For these are my people and this is my homeland, and I

16. And people are like a cup, filth, and existence is
As I've realized, wolves that carry treachery in their fangs

17. And the universe, by my life, I see in it nothing
Except foxes whispering today to foxes

And melted in shyness from our remnants

19. Beyond this, answer, O Sheikh, is it difficult
For me if I spent my life drunk?

20. And how by God will He grant me
Forgiveness and pardon for this, my story?

21. Oboud says the gardens of paradise
Have at their doors a guard called Satisfaction

22. Who drank no water from Lake Tiberias
And has no land in Gilead or a neighborhood in Beesan

23. And took no shade in Ajlun’s forests
Or livestock in the plateaus of As-Salt

24. And did not charm our birds at dawn
In Al-Ghor filled with singing and melodies

25. And no doe of Al-Shuta wet its lips
Or gazelles grazed in Al-Husn’s prairies

26. And the Jordan will never make it desire
Or its sanctity will make it yearn

27. If this, O Sheikh, is the state of your gardens
Then take it far, for it is not to my liking

28. And say with me in straightforward words
You were not, O Garden of Paradise, my refuge

29. O questioner of Al-Bani about the echoes there
Once, and about their return, asking again

30. If the echo would suffice his questioning
From eloquent lips that ignite melodies
