1. The cupbearer approaches, greet him,
Pass the cup of wine amongst yourselves,

2. It is not for the old man, though I'm no youth,
To haggle over my aunt's price;

3. I bought the wine with her price.
We do not serve the wine but drink it,

4. When people leave we do not go,
We do not complain but gently chide,

5. We do not jest but play,
Sometimes disguised and sometimes obvious.

6. The tryst is announced but passions vary,
As for me, friend, I indulge them all,

7. They are deaf, blind and dead,
Our Shaykh Hamza has so decreed,

8. So let the sober feel their lack anew.
Let us feel the drunkenness of Time,

9. And leave people to behold the unseen,
And call your shaykhs forbidden;

10. Are seers not the worst seers?
I will sell religion and world for a sip,

11. Passion laughs and duty sighs,
The musician plays and the tool dances,

12. We know not who in us grieves,
Suspicion is gone, some vice is suspicion,

13. I have grasped the secret of the universe.
