1. A country walked with its plains and mountains
Gushing with its women and men

١. بَلَدٌ مَشَى بِسُهُولِهِ وَجِبَالِهِ
مُتَدَفِّقًا بِنِسَائِهِ وَرِجَالِهِ

2. Its nights were lit by the glimmer of its tears
And sorrow flowed like flames on its homes

٢. وَشَّى لَيَاليَهُ بريقُ دُمُوعِهِ
وَسَرَى الأَسَى لَهَبًا عَلَى آصَالِهِ

3. And when it walked, grieving for its son
Magnify its sorrow, and do not ask of its state

٣. وَإِذَا مَشَى وَهوَ المُفَجَّعُ بابنِهِ
أَكْبِرْ أساه ولا تَسَلْ عَنْ حَالِهِ

4. In a procession like a torrent, were it not
Going slowly, and silence being all its speech

٤. فِي مَوكبٍ كَالسَّيلِ لولا أَنَّهُ
مُتَمَهِّلٌ وَالصَّمْتُ كُلُّ مَقَالِهِ

5. It's as though tripping on its tears
Or walking upon its hopes

٥. فَكَأَنَّهُ مُتَعَثِّرٌ بِدُمُوعِهِ
أَوْ أَنَّهُ يَمْشِي عَلَى آمَالِهِ

6. And there a coffin, the darkness of which
Is like a resting place for it

٦. وَهُنَاكَ نَعْشٌ فِي القُلُوبِ سَوَادُهُ
فَكَأَنَّمَا فِيهَا مَحَطُّ رِحَالِهِ

7. Guarded by a delegation of youth bidding farewell
To the shaykh of its awakening, the hero of its independence

٧. يَحْتَاطُهُ وَفْدُ الشَّبَابِ مُوَدِّعًا
فِي شَيْخِ نَهْضَتِهِ فَتى اسْتِقْلَالِهِ

8. And behind the bier you see a reverent people
Blessed by touching its shadow

٨. وَتَرَى ورَاءَ النَّعْشِ شَعْبًا خَاشِعًا
مُتَبَرِّكًا مِنْهُ بِلَمْسِ ظِلَالِهِ

9. Its guards have lowered their arms since he who fell
Guardian of peace, martyr of lifelong struggle

٩. نَكَسَ السِّلاحَ حُمَاتُهُ لَمَّا هَوَى
حَامِي السلامِ شَهِيدَ طُولِ نِضَالِهِ

10. So who is he lying drowned in his eternal rest
Flooded with the abundance of his glory?

١٠. فَمَنِ المُسَجَّى غَارِقًا بِسُبَاتِهِ
فِي النَّعشِ يَغْمُرُه بفيضِ جلَالِهِ

11. And upon him a halo of holiness
Its white drops the whiteness of his deeds

١١. وَعَلَيْهِ مِنْ نُورِ القَدَاسَةِ هَالَةٌ
ذَرَّاتُهَا البيضاءُ بيضُ فِعَالِهِ

12. And his right hand extended as though
It was spread one last time with its generosity

١٢. وَيَمِينُهُ مَمْدُودَةٌ فَكَأَنَّهَا
بُسِطَتْ لآخرِ مَرةٍ بنَوَالِهِ

13. That right hand that tended the friendship of a ruler
While people's necks were obedient to its left

١٣. تِلْكَ اليَمِينُ رَعَتْ صَدَاقةَ عَاهِلٍ
كَانَتْ رِقَابُ الناسِ طَوْعَ شِمَالِهِ

14. And you see on his lips a smile of relief
The smile of one unshackled from his chains

١٤. وَتَرَى عَلَى شَفَتَيْهِ بَسْمَةَ رَاحَةٍ
هِيَ بَسْمَةُ المَفْكُوكِ مِنْ أَغْلَالِهِ

15. Or the smile of the crucified bearing
On his lips the verses of pardon for his killers

١٥. أَوْ بَسْمَةُ المَصْلُوبِ حَامِلَةً عَلَى
شَفَتَيْهِ آيَ الصَّفْحِ عَنْ مُغْتَالِهِ

16. The feeder of the starving with all his food
The giver of the destitute the remainder of his money

١٦. المُطْعِمُ الطَّاوِينَ جُلَّ طَعَامِهِ
وَالوَاهِبُ البؤسَاءَ بَاقِيَ مَالِهِ

17. I do not ask for mercy from my Lord for him
For I am certain of the goodness of his fate

١٧. لَا أَطْلُبُ الرَّحَمَاتِ مِنْ رَبِّي لَهُ
فَأَنَا عَلَى ثِقَةٍ بِحُسْنِ مَآلِهِ

18. All people are God's dependents
The best of them most dutiful to His dependents

١٨. فَالخَلْقُ كُلُّهُمُ عِيَالُ اللهِ
أَقْرَبُهُمْ إِلَيْهِ أَبَرُّهُمْ بِعِيَالِهِ
