1. O ambitious nation, in whose heart
The youth seethe and courage throbs,
١. يَا أُمَّةً طَمَّاحَةً، فِي صَدْرِهَا
يَغْلِي الشبابُ ويُخفِقُ الإقدامُ
2. Between Lebanon and Syria's coast,
The land is barren, the sands desolate,
٢. مَا بَيْنَ لُبْنَانٍ وَشَاطِئِ سُورِيا
وَالأَرْضُ قَحْطٌ وَالرِّمَالُ عِقامُ
3. No keen-eyed searcher can detect for you
A glimmer through the shroud of fever,
٣. عَمَّا يُفَتِّشُ نَاظِرٌ لَكِ نَيِّرٌ
مِنْ وَطْأَةِ الحُمَّى عَلَيْهِ ظَلَامُ
4. God has images which chant His praise at dawn,
And the sea flashes its billowy scimitar,
٤. لِلَّهِ صُورٌ وَهْيَ تَسْبَحُ فِي الضِّيَا
وَالبَحْرُ يَلْمَعُ مَوْجُهُ البَسَّامُ
5. On the blue bay's beauty white sails flutter,
Above them standards wave,
٥. فِي زُرْقَةِ الشطِّ الجميلِ تَأَلَّقَتْ
بيضاءَ تخفُقُ فَوْقَهَا الأَعْلَامُ
6. The ships have swelling canvas,
And the splash of oars makes an orchestra of sound,
٦. وَهُناكَ أشْرِعَةٌ لَهُنَّ تموُّجٌ
وَصَدى مَجَاذِيفٍ لَهُنَّ صِدَامُ
7. Ships of sturdy cedar, their lordly burdens
piled up by Hiram,
٧. سُفُنٌ مِنَ الأَرْزِ المَتِينِ يُعِدُّهَا
مُسْتَعْرِضًا أَحْمَالَهَا حِيرامُ
8. With ebony decks inlaid
With pearls and gems in a dazzling pattern,
٨. بِالصَّوْلَجَانِ الأَسْوَدِ اللمَّاعِ مِنْ
دُرَرٍ لَهُنَّ تَوَهُّجٌ وَنِظَامُ
9. With fragrant wood and ivory and gems
Of chrysolite and chrysoprase in heaps.
٩. مِنْ عَسْجَدٍ فِيهَا وَبَرفيرٍ وَمِن
خَزٍّ وَمِنْ غَالِي العَقِيقِ رُكَامُ
10. Sail on! Maqar blesses him who sails,
Yearning astern, hope ahead.
١٠. سِيرُوا فَملقارٌ يُبَارِك مَنْ جَلَوْا
وَالشَّوقُ خلفٌ وَالرَّجاءُ أَمَامُ
11. From the land of Sidon and of Arados,
Gebal's warriors have tightened their ropes
١١. مِنْ أَرْضِ صيدونٍ وَمِنْ آرادُسٍ
وَجُبَيلَ قَدْ شَدُّوا الحِبَالَ وَقَامُوا
12. To spread the ways of life and plant
The ensign of culture while the peoples slumber.
١٢. لِيُوَسِّعُوا سُبُلَ الحَيَاةِ وَيَنْشُرُوا
عَلَمَ الحَضَارَةِ وَالشُّعُوبُ نِيَامُ
