1. How much suffering the cat endured
With sighs followed by moans

2. And tears shed in sorrow
I am in Baghdad, utterly miserable

3. A stranger's lot is yearning and lament
O you who blame me, each day passes easily

4. To you from me, I am infatuated
My poetry is inferior and deficient

5. And it is time to stop provoking and appease it
Its masters are burdened by debts

6. Goods made obsolete by al-Ma'mun
