1. Has the slanderer's envy stilled and no beloved remains?
The bough of separation has leafed out while you are my solace.

2. May the beloved's estrangement achieve what it desires,
For is not all love but flowing tears and lament?

3. As if you've not heard of bonds of affection split,
And of the absence of a union that will not return.

4. As if, when I lose you but an hour,
I've lost you among all existence, O stranger!

5. And though I've grasped at means of soothing, they've betrayed me-
A conscience over which your love keeps watch.

6. So why am I rushing to do what you desire
When your deeds are of that which I do not love?

7. Has my pardoning your many sins made you vain
And my overlooking certain of your acts that gave me pause?

8. As if, before me, none have ever been infatuated,
And in all the world, none but you has been beloved!

9. To God I complain, remembering, but there is
No share of love's kindness that is my lot from the beloved.
