1. How much grief and sorrows acquaintances have,
And how many cries, laments and passions!
١. كَم لِلمَعارف مِن نَوحٍ وَأَحزانِ
وَمِن نَحيب وَأَنّات وَأَشجانِ
2. And how many are their weeping in blood
For the lonely pillar of the sons of homelands!
٢. وَكَم لَها مِن بُكاء بِالدِماء عَلى
وَحيد أَعلام أَبناء لِأَوطان
3. Abu Al-Su'ud, who among people attained
Through his excellence, height above Mars and Saturn,
٣. أَبو السُعود الَّذي بَين الأَنام سَما
بِفَضله فَوقَ مرّيخ وَكيوان
4. And through knowledge and literature reached a rank
That no other in his time attained.
٤. وَنالَ بِالعلم وَالآداب مَنزلةً
ما نالَها قَبلَهُ في عَصرِهِ ثاني
5. He took the lead, and wise sayings submit
To him in the race track of wisdom.
٥. وَأَحرَز السَبقَ وَالأَمثالُ مذعنةٌ
لَهُ بِذَلك في مضمار عرفان
6. Ask the books about him - did they see
Anyone else among us a better human?
٦. سل التآليف عَنهُ هَل سِواه هُنا
لِعَينِها كانَ فينا خَير إِنسان
7. And say to the prose of Al-Laili when he translated it
And he was only twenty - with perfect translation.
٧. وَقُل لِنظم اللآلي حينَ عرَّبَه
وَهوَ اِبنُ عشرين تَعريباً بِإِتقان
8. Did he use the dictionary of languages
For what appeared of good syntax and benevolence?
٨. هَل اِستَعان بِقاموس اللُغات عَلى
ما بانَ مِن حُسن تَركيب وَإِحسان
9. Or did a brother of excellence and clarity
Precede him in solving the problems of sciences?
٩. أَم هَل تقدّمه في حل مُشكلة
مِن العُلوم أَخو فَضلٍ وَتبيان
10. And say to the students of history of nations
He who conveyed his meanings with dedication is gone.
١٠. وَقُل لِطُلاب تاريخ العُموم مَضى
مَن كانَ يُلقي مَعانيه بِإِمعان
11. Gone is he who came to you with agreed upon
Benefits that two did not differ about.
١١. مَضى الَّذي جاءَكم مِنهُ بِمُتَّفقٍ
عَلَيهِ لَم يَختَلف في نَفعه اِثنان
12. Of gentle nature, hard to gather, his
Style gave his talks ease for minds.
١٢. مُهذبُ الطَبعِ صَعبُ الجَمع أَكسبه
أَسلوبُه محضَ تَسهيل لأذهان
13. From him you gained, and so did others; he unveiled
To you facts of peoples and countries.
١٣. مِنهُ اِستفدتم وَمِنهُ غيركم كشفت
له حَقائق أَقوام وبلدان
14. Gone is he who built in summarizing most of
Its origins firmly for the structure.
١٤. مَضى الَّذي شادَ في تَلخيص معظمه
مِنهُ الأُصول بإحكام لبنيان
15. I wish he lived until it was complete and erected
For him were the solid walls and pillars!
١٥. يا لَيتَهُ عاشَ حَتّى تمَّ وَاِرتَفَعَت
لَهُ رَصيناتُ جُدرانٍ وَأَركان
16. And he showed more clearly in the rest for the noble
The eloquence of Ibn Abi Sulma and Sahbaan.
١٦. وَكانَ أَظهر في باقيه لِلنُبَلا
بَلاغةَ اِبن أَبي سُلمى وَسحبان
17. Gone is he who in restarting Egypt had
Sound opinion and did not ignore the sinner.
١٧. مَضى الَّذي كانَ في اِستئناف مَصر لَهُ
رَأي سَديد وَلا يُغضي عَن الجاني
18. And made reason work in correcting injustices
After listening to what two opponents say.
١٨. وَيُعمِلُ الفكرَ في رَدِّ المَظالم مِن
بَعد اِستِماعٍ لِما يُبديهِ خصمان
19. And he was good at recording the minutes in
Every case with ability and competence.
١٩. وَكانَ يُحسنُ تَحرير المَضابط في
كُل القَضايا بِتَمكين وَإِمكان
20. Gone is the zealous, intelligent, eloquent one - many
Of the virtuous testified for him, both near and far.
٢٠. مَضى الهمام الذَكي الحبر من شهدت
لَهُ الأَفاضل من قاص وَمِن داني
21. Oh what a loss of prose and poetry in a time
That the arrow of evil struck with diminishing!
٢١. يا ضَيعة النظم وَالمَنثور في زَمَن
رَماه سَهم الرَدى فيهِ بِنُقصان
22. If only the day we lost him in Safar
Was not with a predecessor in every field.
٢٢. لا كانَ يَوم فُجِعنا مِنهُ في صفر
بِعالم سابق في كُل ميدان
23. With a perfect scholar whose biographies
Came to us in everything with proof.
٢٣. بِعالم كامل جاءَت تَراجمُه
في كُل شَيء لَنا مِنهُ بِبُرهان
24. And a composer whose eloquence
Judges over all known for prominence.
٢٤. وَناظمٍ ناثر تَقضي فَصاحتُه
لَهُ عَلى كُل يَعروف برجحان
25. And a speaker in excellent phrasing in a
Renowned language of French and Italian.
٢٥. وَناطقٍ بِبَديع اللَفظ في لُغةٍ
مَأثورةٍ عَن فرنسيسٍ وَطليان
26. And one who performed services to his homeland
With honesty openly and in secret.
٢٦. وَقائمٍ بخدامات لِموطنه
مَع الأَمانة في سرّ وَإِعلان
27. And who spent the finest of his life in books
That revived every lesson for one who passes away.
٢٧. وَصارف لِنَفيس العُمر في كُتب
أَحيا بِها كُل رَسم دارس فاني
28. And winner of praise in good upbringing
Of the valiant Unasi and branch of Dewha the second.
٢٨. وَفائز بِالثَنا في حُسن تَربية
لِلشَهم أُنسي وَغُصن الدَوحة الثاني
29. And earner of pride that none
Of status in the beloved homeland rivals him in.
٢٩. وَحائز لفَخارٍ لا يُشاركه
فيهِ مِن الوَطَن المَألوف ذُو شان
30. Where he raised a sword of resolve from his talent
With the determination of an alert saying.
٣٠. حَيث اِنتَضى سَيفَ عَزمٍ مِن قَريحته
بِحَزم ذي همةٍ لِلقَول يَقظان
31. And he was the first to show his ruler
In love of Egypt, valor and people.
٣١. وَكانَ أَوّل مَن أَبدى لِمالكه
في حُب مَصر وَفي شَهم وسُكان
32. The newspaper "Bik wa Wadi al-Nile" he made as a deposit
From resources that quench a thirsty one's thirst.
٣٢. صَحيفة بِكَ وَادي النيل أَودعها
مِن المَوارد ما يَصفو لِظَمآن
33. After it "Rawdat al-Akhbar" appeared
And its sun shone between two cheeks.
٣٣. وَبَعدَها رَوضة الأَخبار قَد ظَهرت
وَأَشرَقت شَمسُها ما بَين أَخدان
34. Had Majid tried to count what his right hand wrote
Adorning times of beauty and grace,
٣٤. وَلَو أَراد مَجيد حَصر ما كَتبت
يُمناه مما يُحلِّي جيد أَزمان
35. Especially in histories, literature
And laws of ruling a sultan,
٣٥. لا سِيَما في تَواريخ وَفي أَدَب
وَفي قَوانين أَحكامٍ لِسُلطان
36. The spears of his pens in a thousand diaries
Would have fallen short of recording the easiest of it.
٣٦. لقصرت مِنهُ عَن إِحصاء أَيسَره
رماحُ أَقلامه في أَلف دِيوان
37. So may God protect his two sons and immerse him
In his grave with the dew of pardon and forgiveness.
٣٧. فَاللَه يَحفَظ نجليهِ وَيَغمره
في قَبره بِنَدى عَفو وَغُفران
38. And be pleased with him and please him and lodge him
In gardens of lovely maidens and boys.
٣٨. وَعَنهُ يَرضى وَيُرضيه وَيُسكنه
جَنات حور بهيات وَولدان
39. This is what Majdi said at the obituary he dated -
May Abu Al-Su'ud have good pleasure and acceptance.
٣٩. ما قالَ مَجدي لَدى نعيٍ يُؤرخه
أَبو السُعود لَهُ طَيب برضوان
