1. The nightingale of joy in Egypt sang
Above a branch in the garden of companionship outstretched

2. And the gentle breeze turned a clear drink
Of dew always flowing from the vine

3. And gave it mixed with pleasure
Intoxicating drink from which the abstainer became inebriated

4. And the foolish sentinel about us was preoccupied
While the beloved friend rejoiced in the union

5. And we indulged in merriment but
With dignity its modesty bore witness

6. And we seized enjoyable times
From it an opportunity for joy to be praised

7. And we spread in nearness flags of union
With the banners of joy in us supported

8. And our horses raced in an arena
Our leading in it for congratulations confirmed

9. And we rose to a banquet of a sun
In the heights for it a lofty edifice built

10. Oh what a generous one for a king
He among kings in existence unequaled

11. And he is for favors an vast ocean
Of sweet water in Egypt still pouring

12. The people slept in the shade of security
In all regions in justice far‐reaching

13. And he cloaked them in prosperity with a garment
Each day in his time made anew

14. And the kings of speech praised him
With talk leaning on virtues

15. Talk refined from trusted sources
Transmitted from his father and grandfather

16. That the destitute without asking
From him won a downpour inexhaustible

17. Oh breeze of joy for God's sake enliven
You are our spirit in us echoing

18. For with Saeed the Victorious son‐in‐law of the Khedive
In his nights the bulbul of companionship sang

19. And for his joy I sacrifice myself for you record
The sun of glory marched to the full moon
